  • Fill the legs with ice melting stuff (the salt that you throw on your stairs so that the mailman won't slip).
  • Put the "legs" in (or on top of the ice in) your gutters.
  • It won't be magic if the gutters are already full of ice (our first mistake), but it'll help loosen it up and get the it melting.
Ideally, you should put these "legs" in while the gutters have nothing in them. Lesson learned a little late here.
If you are going to use "ice melt" on your roof, just be sure to note where your gutters drain too. It will kill your landscaping so if you have flowers, bushes etc, that can get expensive and time consuming.

This Old House recommends using calcium chloride, as it is relatively harmless for your roof. Rock salt should be avoided.

I've been doing this for the last few days. It melts a channel very quickly.

I wish I'd found out about this BEFORE the water started trickling in

Funny, because they delivered our mail in a 20" snowstorm, but not in this.

One problem in my town is that a lot of local roads - like the one I live on - are literally one lane (in the sense that if you encounter an oncoming vehicle one of you has to back into a driveway) in places. This has to play havoc with the delivery schedule. UPS didn't even send out trucks for a couple of days.

The performance of the town plows has been ... inadequate.

Here's what I'm thinking... Above the blue line 7-11" of snow locally heavier.

Between Red and Blue .40" of ice.

Below the red line .30" of ice..

Nobody is going anywhere in the morning.. Make yourself some nice coffee and take some pictures.

Ride up to Danbury was fun this morning.

25 in Trumbull and Monroe was good for the most part, at least I could see the asphalt. Things went downhill once I crossed into Newtown. Roads were a disater in Danbury. Comming back at 9, 84 was a mess, but got off at exit 34 and took that to route 8 back to Trumbull. 84 was good. Too add insult to injury, I drove all the way up there only to find out school was cancelled

Most were driving cautiously from what I observed save for the one moron on 84 who was tailing everyone in left lane going 60+ mph.

None here either.

Whatever happened to "in snow, in rain, in sleet, in hail"?

Anyway, it was going to be all bills and I like my mail carrier, so I'm happy that he stayed home and stayed cozy. I doubt he'll be here tomorrow, either.

ETA: I take that back. We did get mail. Must've arrived VERY late but it's here. Crazy mail carrier; I wish he'd stayed home.
