I am looking at renting an apartment on Stratford Ave near Main Street. Is this a safe area?

Yes, it is fine. I should note that as you go towards Bridgeport it goes downhill.

Is Lavery's bar still open? How about Mr. P's on Main and Stratford Ave? If they are by all means move there.

Thank you for the responses. As for those places being open I am not sure because I am not terribly familiar with the area.

It's "safe", but it is beginning to look a bit haggard and desolate. You might be able to find something a little nicer a few blocks north or east of that area for just a few more $$$.

Yes safe- but by all means lock your doors and your car, and use a steering wheel lock. Never make it easy for a drive by thief to take something..... Oh and don't go to dive bars if you can help it. Ie: mr p and lavery

Shouldn't be too hard to do since neither of those bars exist and haven't for some time. Mr. P's is now the much more docile Hard's Corner Tavern and Lavery's was razed and replaced with a new clean sports bar. It's pretty much empty most of the time.

To the OP, yes this is a safe area depending on how close you actually are to the train station. Things get a little dicier once you make your way past Stratford Ave. Main St is still fine at that point but you don't want to be heading down Stratford Ave towards Bridgeport.

How about the bar up on the top of Barnum Ave? Been so long I can't remember the name.

As a rule, go towards Milford and it gets nicer - go towards Bridgeport and it gets worse.
