Our car registration is paid to the state and is not that high but you will pay taxes to the town on your car. Ours were around $800 for two nice newer vehicles in a town with a mill rate in the low 30's. Jay

Mine was $331 for a 2008 new semi-sporty car.

That's about what we paid, too.

I'm not sure how your taxes are almost half what ours are with similar mill rates. Especially knowing you have luxury SUV's for vehicles.

I got nailed for a 2008 truck to the tune of $850.00 alone.

But hey, the new "youth center" is completed in town with multiple large flat screens and competition billard tables in the lower level like a sports bar...

Vehicle registration is renewed every 2 years @ $75
Emissions is due every 2 years @ $20
Vehicle property tax "book value" x town mill rate
There are no saftey inspections for noncommerical vehicles

You must remember that car taxes are billed in "arears" meaning it was for the year before when I had older vehicles. I just looked at the mill rate for Glastonbury and it is 29.65, not the 30's I quoted. Still we paid $783 in car taxes last year.

Looking at Manchester, there are three different rates. The town rate is 31.58. The Eighth District rate is 29.59 and the Special Services District is 36.28. Not a big difference to me. I am not sure why there is such a big difference unless my wife is not telling me the correct amount. Jay

Whoa! $700 per car!! We have an 06' and an '05 Lexus, but we are looking solely in Greenwich. How do I figure out the cost there? Our realtor said it was negligible....like $200-300 per car (but not a big deal for us since we were used to paying $300-400 in CA registration every year anyway). That is insane!

I'd ask to speak to people in the neighborhood you are considering..directly.

Greenwich has one of the lowest mill rates in CT due to the value of the homes. Car taxes will be the lowest in the state since it's based on mill rate.
