Thanks for everyone's input! Will definitely check out Stamford places in a few weeks when we come up to visit.

BF also applied to a job in Shelton... if he got that job, what are your thoughts on Milford? cheaper than Stamford and i could take the train to work?

yeap, Milford is fine, if you take the train. You wont want to do the commute from Darien to Milford in the afternoon/evening. Same from shelton. As far as finding less expensive homes and taxes, stamford, Norwalk, stratford, Milford. Try those towns.

I love it in Milford and I'm your age. It has a small but very active downtown, especially in summer. Good nightlife, restaurants, shopping. Very coastal feel. Living near train would be a plus. The area around the station is very nice and all of Milford has low crime. And yes, rent is lower.

Express train to Stamford is 35 minutes and it's a 10-15 minute drive to Shelton. Train to NYC is about 80 minutes. I think train to Darien is around 30-35 minutes. You're also near New Haven, which has a ton of culture, nightlife and restaurants.

Check out Spinnaker Apartments on Google, they have some nice downtown options.

Traffic from Shelton to Milford is nonexistent. I make the drive to the Norwalk area every day and traffic does not start until Fairfield.

For Shelton job, you could look at Trumbull, Monroe and Newtown too.
Monroe is very nice, has a lot of condos and very close to Meritt Parkway. Real estate (and property taxes) is very affordable and has good schools. Newtown is a little farther and tiny bit more expensive. Trumbull is comparatively a little more urban.

I would choose Stamford; although there is an Avalon in Darien and it is right in the Noroton Heights area that has all the shopping and metro-north train station; that you would need nearby. Just wanted to make sure you were aware of it

If having a decent nightlife at your fingertips is important to you, I would recommend Stamford. The city itself has a lot to offer, but its proximity to NYC makes it that much more attractive.

For a 2 bedroom downtown, at a minimum you should expect to pay $2000/month. There is also a great new building called BLVD, and I believe those are starting at $2500 for a two bedroom. If you expand your seach to the outskirts of downtown Stamford, you'll be able to find cheaper rent/bigger units.

I specialize in the area, so feel free to PM me if you have more specific questions.
