I'm just curious that people are say that the city, especially downtown, are getting better. Since I'm planning on moving that way in the Summer. I've lived in Colorado Springs since 2002. City is almost 3 times the population, about 425,000 compared to about 150,000 in Bridgeport. And there's TWENTY murders in 2012 there, compared to 24 here. So I'm just curious on where the safe area(s), if any, of the city are, and where to really avoid.

I have found that the really bad part of Bridgeport is called Bridgeport.

Are you sure you want to live directly in Bridgeport, as some of the cities/towns surrounding Bridgeport are much nicer and safer. I'm sure Bridgeport has a few good areas; I'm not familar with Bridgeport much except for a couple of bad areas, so someone else here will have to help you with that.

I can however suggest some nice cities/towns near Bridgeport. Stratford is an okay town with many nice neighborhoods (the further away from Bridgeport & closer toward Milford the better). Milford is also a nice city with lots to do, great beaches, beautiful downtown/harbor/duck ponds area, lots of shopping, parks, restaurants, etc. My favorite area of Milford is Woodmont, but the entire city is safe (with Devon just looking run down, but not dangerous). Fairfield (which is expensive) is also a nice city (reminds me of Milford, but more upscale).

Really though, a deciding factor in where to live is your budget. That would make it easier for us to help you, as budget is key in Connecticut as you can see a home valued at $195,000 and a mile later a home worth $1,500,000.

The best parts of Bridgeport are the western part of Black Rock, the Brooklawn area and the North End (the further west, the better).

Beardsley Area is OK, but it's surrounded by bad areas.

In general, the best parts of Bridgeport border on the town of Fairfield, and except for Black Rock, are north of North Avenue. In Black Rock, you need to be west of Ellsworth Street, and closer to the water is the best.

Bridgeport doesn't have 150,000 residents It has around 140,000 Plus it doesn't feel like CT largest city. Bridgeport had 23 homicides last year 2012. 140,000+ plus residents pack in 16 Sq mi Small area. Bridgeport is in top ten in the nation for highest taxes in the nation. Downtown Bridgeport need a major improvement to be like Downtown New Haven for etc. North End contain the largest population in the city

Bridgeport 140,000-143,000
New Haven 130,000-131,000
Hartford 126,000
Stamford 123,000

Stamford is growing fast which lot of condos and new homes under construction.

Personal Option on CT Largest Cities

1. New Haven
2. Hartford
3. Bridgeport
4. Stamford

Most of my family is from there, so I know the city very well.

It's a hell of a lot better than it was in the 90's. I have first-hand experience of how bad it was in Jersey City then and would not want to go near Newark at that time.

Camden, on the other hand - is still the #2 most dangerous city in America.

Newark is lot bigger city than Bridgeport

Newark 27 Sq with nearly 280,000 residents
Bridgeport 16 Sq with nearly 143,000 residents

Camden has poverty rate of 45% which is highest nation and serious urban problems which explain it is 2nd or 3rd most dangerous city in the U.S Lucky Bridgeport rank 28th on the list according to CQ Press

Bridgeport is Connecticut's largest city, but it doesn't feel like it because its population is not too far off its nearest competitor (New Haven.) Another thing is that Connecticut lacks true large cities, even our biggest city is still rather small/medium in size.

Stamford is probably the city with the highest quality population growth, but I'm not sure if it is growing faster than Bridgeport, New Haven, or Hartford.

I disagree. In population, Bridgeport is number one; in land area its Stamford.

Not necessarily my friend.

There are neighborhoods in Stratford bordering Bridgeport that are safe/clean/quiet. The area of Stratford that does border Milford(Devon, actually) is noisy, highly commercial, and somewhat gritty.

when i went to the U of B in 80-82, crime was the #1 concern. a friend of mine was actually mugged inside Famous Pizza sitting at the counter. going to Pop's grocery at Lafayette and University was a dark and scary experience. i don't know what was scarier, the ride from exit 26 past Fr Paneck Village or exit 27 down Lafayette

I wonder if Bridgeport has been the same, better or worse since 1980
