I have a vague recollection of the Chinese place, do you remember the farm shop? I used to be where the griswold mall is now, specifically Bertuccis pizza and their parking lot.

Topps may have been short-lived, as was a burger joint down the road called Wetson's.
As a young tot, I remember going to Shartenberg's in downtown New Haven. They had this big pit where the kids would "fish" for prizes out of it. I got a tracer machine: one pen attached to another would duplicate whatever you wrote on a second page.
I remember Malley's and Macy's opening. When Malley's was new, you'd park your car in the dirt lot across the street (where Knights of Columbus is now) and walk thru a pedestrian tunnel right into the store (next to the bird cage, I recall)
And who can remember a dept store in E Haven called "Star's". It was short-lived, but big news in East Haven in the early 70s, which til then had only Bradlees.
Great memory. I enjoyed reading your post and remember all those great places you spoke about. Myself (Garry) and my closest friend to this day (Bobby) worked at Yum Yum in the 70's. We were asst. managers, worked the front end together. Never wrote down orders, didn't need register to tell us how much change to give and would take 4 or 5 orders each and get them all right. Some customers used to scratch their heads trying to figure out how we did it. It was teamwork and common sense. Wish we could go back.

I believe that Wetson's was around for a reasonable period of time. It was popular with my parents generation in the mid-60's, and there were at least a couple still around in the mid-70's.

I just remembered another old hideous department store from my youth: Stratford Town Fair.....

It's funny that as an adult the only "department store" that i can tolerate is Target. If our choices today were the likes of Bradlees/Caldor/Alexanders/Barkers/STF/etc., i'd probably never step foot in a store. The "good old days" they weren't when it came to department stores.

How about the Cos Coboo hamburger joint outside the Stratford Town Fair? 15 cent burgers too.

There was a Wetsons in Fairfield too for a while up on Black Rock Turnpike. It was like McDonalds only the food was worse (if that is possible). It was so greasy, yuck! Jay
