to MKIV808: I think maybe you mean Amazing Stores. We had one in Orange and there was one in Manchester. I loved them - never knew what you would find in there. I still have things I bought there over 20 years ago. In fact, I have an excellent, large magnifying glass, brass around the lens, a nice handle and a velvet pouch it is stored in. I bought it at Amazing - it was in a display case with no price and the clerk opened the case, let me look at it and said she guesses it was, like, $2.98. For that price, of course I grabbed it and still use it very often. Really miss the old stores. I was in New Haven back in the old days and we had WT Grants, Kresges, Newberrys and Woolworths. Several of them had good lunch counters, too. Also, Arthur Treachers Fish and Chips was very good, but no longer have stores around here.

Another thing about our now-departed stores: all the local chains, Ames, Bradlees and Caldor, gave senior citizen discounts - try to get that at the big national chains that now dominate our retail scene. When I moved into my present condo in the early 1990's, my mom went shopping with me for things I needed and bought them with her senior discount. I got my TV, microwave, vacuum, VCR, etc. and they gave the discount even if the item was on sale. You could not beat the prices on appliances and electronics at Caldor, then the 10% discount took care of the sales tax and then some. As far as I know only Kohl's gives a senior discount now, usually on Wednesday.

I remember most of these since they were in Mass also where Im originally from. I believe there is still a Bradlees that sits empty in Foxboro, Mass. The rumor has always been that Stop & Shop refused to sell the bldg, and keep it empty rather than have competition set up shop.

Stop&Shop has been known in the past to set-up "shell" LLC's that assume the leases of closed supermarkets and department stores, just to leave the building empty and stunt competition. I don't know whether they're still actively doing this.

Good riddance to Bradlees and Caldor. The dumpy KMart's of today aren't any worse than Bradlees/Caldor were at their "best". On a side note, i wonder how many people actually called it "Caldor"? It seemed that 9 out of 10 would call it "Caldors".

You've just reminded me of a couple of gas stations that used to operate in CT:

I sure do miss Sage- Allen- (used to visit the Old Saybrook & Hartford stores ). Far superior to Kohl's in my opinion. There is still a Colonial Market in Essex.

I loved G Fox in Hartford. Growing up in Hartford, I have fond memories of going shopping there with my grandmother - particularly around Christmas time. The woman who lived diagonal/across the street from us - she passed about 3 years ago - was actually Bea Auerbachs personal secretary until she passed. I might not have believed it, but she showed us pictures of a much younger her with Mrs. A at the store and at her home. It was interesting to see them. She also had an incredible diamond broach that was given to her as a gift from Mrs A for X number of years of service which I forget.

Anyone remember Medi Mart? Zayre? Service Merchandise? Kings? How about Warehouse Foods? D&L??

We used to go to the Ground Round in Stamford a lot, as well as the Beefsteak Charlies in Westport. We loved the "all-you-can-eat" shrimp buffet.

I do remember most of the stores listed so far. Also Woolworth's in Stamford, and Waldbaum's in various towns. I never heard anyone say Caldor's before, only Caldor, but it wouldn't surprise me.

there was a Zayres in Norwich at one time (80's?) that eventually got bought out by Ames. i think it was that acquisition that led to the downfall of Ames.
