I have recently took a new job in Norwalk on Connecticut Ave. I am a single white male in my late 20's. I am from the northwest part of CT and am not familiar with the area. I am looking for a 1 bedroom apartment in a complex (not a multi-family) around 1000 a month. I would like to live in either Norwalk or Stamford. I am interested in where the bad parts are and the good parts when it comes to crime and overall living.

I'm afraid you're pricing yourself out of both towns.

That price is going to be impossible in Stamford unless it's a bad area or a crummy apartment. So, unfortunately I would cross Stamford out completely.

It's a doable, but difficult price point in Norwalk as well. My friend had an OK studio in East Norwalk for $1100 a month. You could probably pull it off, but don't expect a nice place. The bad areas of Norwalk are in South Norwalk around and below the train station. The area around the hospital isn't great either.

I'd recommend Black Rock in Bridgeport for that price point. It's a decent neighborhood with some good bars, and is inexpensive and relatively safe. Other options could be Stratford or downtown Milford near the train station. Both are a short commute to Norwalk by train, safe and good areas for young professionals (giving Milford perhaps the slight edge for nightlife and activities).
