Sorry I couldn't think of a proper title for this question.

Does anyone know a good trail or park along the CT or Southern RI coastline that offers rugged hiking similar to what one would find at Ragged Mountain or Mt Higby?

I really like Ragged Mtn and sometimes I think, it would be really nice if this had a close up view of the ocean....

Thanks all,

b

That kind of combination (very common on the west coast but not here) is more likely to be found in Maine than in southern New England. In New Haven, East Rock park is a hilly hike with a nice view on top that's very close to the coast, I'm not a perfect expert on this but it's probably one of the best places between NYC and Boston to get what you're asking.

Another good one might be Blue Hills Reservation a few miles south of Boston (not in CT/RI though).

Good question.. I wonder if theres a rule of thumb like for every x amount of height you can see z amount in distance with a clear view. Problem is the "clear view" in CT. I mean I've been on a hill in westport with views of Long Island but those arent the views i assume u want.

I've done Greylock (tallest in MA at 3500') views are incredible! But no water.
I've done Mt Bear (tallest summit in CT at 1560') views are nice but no water as its in far North Eastern part of state
* Bluff point coastal reserve in Groton is a trail with nice views of water but not a rugged climb.

* Devils Hopyard state park in East Haddam is a 300 foot elevation gain. Easy hile with moderate challenging sections and views of valley and a waterfall

* Peoples State forest in winsted, New Hartford. 650' elevation. Views look like white mountains of New Hampshire then it does Connecticut. Beautiful but rugged and strenuos.

I wouldn't call the hiking rugged but the Norman Bird Sanctuary in Newport, RI has water views (very close, right across a road) from the top that are just gorgeous. They have 7 miles of hiking trails, although I have only hiked one and it wasn't a tough hike really but had great views from the top of "hanging rock". It's worth looking into.

If you're willing to go to Maine, Acadia National Park will almost certainly have what you're looking for....

Acadia is spectacular. Amazing park.

You can see the Atlantic on a clear day from the top of Mt. Washington. Pretty cool.

The only place on the entire U.S. Eastern seaboard where mountains meet the sea is Mid-Coast and Downeast Maine.

Second Acadia...as someone who has hiked the AT from Maine to jersey...I recommend getting a copy of the ct walk book and looking for sections with water features. You may like bash bish falls.
