I took a job in Fairfield, CT and am thinking about living in Stamford, since my wife has a job in the city. I'm concerned about the "reverse commute" from Stamford to Fairfield. What are the rush hours and how long will it take to drive? Is the Merritt Parkway better than I-95? Thanks for your help.

That commute is fine. Only traffic if there is construction or an accident. Sometimes it gets bad for no reason in Stamford even for reverse commuters, but for no more than a mile or two.

Well, I commuted last year from Westchester County to Bridgeport, but I had "before rush hour" (for that direction) hours (7:30-3:30). My wife worked for many years in Norwalk 9-5 so I know a lot about it there to.

Right at the height rush hour (8-9am), you will usually see some traffic right around exit 15 on I-95 (rt. 7), but often the left lane is moving and you can go there and bypass it. Other than that basically what mkiv said. What I said is for I-95. Merritt Parkway is basically good no matter what except for construction or accident, the "reverse commute" hotspots are west of Stamford (basically on the Hutch Pkwy in Westchester up to I-287 and I-95 from I-287 to exit 3 or so in Greenwich).

dude just take the train yes train service is super frequent in BOTH directions and the train would be much faster than driving it is a very short train ride and the local fare is dirt cheap( peak fare premium ONLY APPLIES FOR TRAVEL TO GRAND CENTRAL) The drive is horrid at rush hour I-95 = hell no!!! better off with the train.

Yes ur wife uses the train and you can too but you will have to use the train in the opposite direction but this way u 2 can walk to the train together or use Bus to the train. O the buses meet the trains also so you won't need to even drive at all.

you do realize you could have used I-bus to metro-north to reach bridgeport right??? Both of you could have used the bus together o THE I-BUS IS NON-STOP TO STAMFORD from white plains. Plus could have been on the train wife has norwalk and you bridgeport.

I don't live in White Plains I live in the Mt. Vernon/New Rochelle area so I could've in that sense just gone on Metro North. And jobs were not right next door to a metro north station (i.e. they weren't downtown). While I'm sure it is possible to commute that way, it was somewhat inconvenient and didn't need to. Now if we were commuting the other direction I might think different.
