I don't really particularly feel that the ferry was that important to keep around, however this type of attitude is exactly what creates the sort of charmless, history-less suburbs popping up in the south that so seem to entrance the cheap-seekers that come through these forums.

I didn't really expect it from you..

History serves a purpose in my opinion - most people agree, which is why historic districts are protected. If they weren't, they would be gone and all replaced with big box stores.

Exactly - people always seem to forget key facts. It's easier to just rant and throw everything in the same basket.

I don't disagree...but the ferry's are not historic in their current state other than "hey they been pushing people across the river somewhere in this area for 200 years." There is nothing, NOTHING historic about the ferry. Have you been on one? They are pretty modern and the ports/docks are all modern. They are not a lighthouse that has been here for 150 years or whatever.

I like them, don't get me wrong. But they are not needed. Raise the fare to make them self sufficient. Fine. If it was "good times" and we had the cash to blow, sure, lets keep them.

But what's flawed in that argument is that the schools are heavily subsidized by the state and so are the mill rates of most cities WHICH translates directly to schools.
