It's absolutely a strip mall when it comes down to it, and it's absolutely the future of shopping development. Who's to say an updated strip mall isn't the new preference in shopping development? That + downtowns and pedestrian shopping areas (think Santa Monica promenade).

Milford Marketplace is very different aesthetically than a "typical" strip mall. Deep, main street style sidewalks with nice stone work, mixed architecture, hanging signage, storefront parking (which most dated strip mall don't have), etc. It's a nice place to shop. The dingy 70's-90's-style strip malls and outdated indoor malls are now replaced in favor of that kind of development.

Glastonbury is another town with a nice example of it.

I live in the Grasmere section of Fairfield. We have a Home Depot, a Whole Foods, a gym, and a train station all within walking distance. It doesn't get much closer to "NJ suburb" than that. Think Madison/Morristown.

The large indoor shopping mall model is basically dead and has been for a while now. The latest in retail design is what is called a "Lifestyle Center". This model replicates the old style "Main Street" with stores along a street with a wide sidewalk and parking. The idea is to blend medium sized box stores with small stores in a pedestrian friendly setting. Sometimes there are offices or apartments above the stores. It is really not much more than an upscale version of the strip center. Examples of this here in Connecticut include Evergreen Walk in South Windsor; Shops at Farmington Valley in Canton and Blue Back Square in West Hartford. The Milford Marketplace is also an example. I forgot to add that the shopping center in Glastonbury that is also like this is The Shops at Somerset Square. It has been around for almost 20 years now and was desinged by famous Architect Robert A. M. Stern. It is a model for many new shopping centers today and is holding up very nicely.

I also wanted to recommend the OP consider Fairfield. It is a beautiful town with aa nice downtown area and wonderful neighborhoods and is convenient to both New Haven and New York for commuting. Jay
