Hey there,

I'm graduating from Northwestern University in Chicago and has accepted a job offer from BPA. That means I'm moving from the Windy City to a maybe windier, according to the weather information I found on here, Shelton.

I have two survival questions for now and are reaching out to my new community for help :-) Thanks a lot in advance.

1. Public transportation from NYC to Shelton.
I'm attending the annual conference at my new company next Thursday. Is there public transportation available form La Guardia airport to Shelton? Where can I find detailed schedule route and schedule information? I'll be staying at Hilton Garden Inn and the company's address is 2 Corporate Dr.

2. Housing
I'm a recent college grad, which means I'm poor and I'm not thinking about buying a house or a condo in the foreseeable future; I don't drive - I know it's embarrassing and I'm working on it - which means I prefer to live as close as possible to my work. I Google-ed, I Craigslist-ed but had no luck. Are there any other sources that I can turn to?

Thanks tons again and have a great day.

Jack

Jack- welcome.

I assume from your post you will be working in NYC- and want to live in Shelton?

Why have you chosen this town? The commute is brutal. There is no public transportation from Shelton into the city- you can catch Metro North from Milford or Bridgeport along the Connecticut shoreline. You will have to drive from Shelton into one of the cities I named.

You would be better off living in Norwalk or Stratford-closer to NYC and metro north into the city-perhaps others can fill you in more about this. Good luck.

Skytrekker-Thank you very much for the reply.

I'm sorry that I might have caused some confusion-

I will be working in Shelton, where BPA is headquartered, and looking for a place to live as close to the company as possible.

Public transportation from NYC to Shelton is for next Wednesday alone - I'm flying from Chicago to La Guardia and none of my friends is available to give me a ride that day. So I need to take public transportation from the airport to Shelton.

Any tips then?

Thank you very much.

Jack

You probably need to take the NYC train from the airport to Grand Central Station. Then from Grand Central take the Metro North Railroad to either Stratford or Milford CT. Once there, a cab to your final destination in Shelton.

There is a Metro North station in Derby/Shelton, but you would have to switch trains in Bridgeport.

Fairfield, Bridgeport, Stratford and Milford up to New Haven are all along the main line straight out of Grand Central.

I'm sorry, I did not realize that their is a stop Derby-Shelton on the metro north railroad. You could probably swith in Norwalk or Stamford for service to Derby-Shelton. Go to the Metro North railroad website for additional information.

Jack

thanks for the clarification !!
I hate to sound uninformed-what is BPA??
As I alluded to above- you will have to catch Metro North from Bridgeport into NYC-You might be able to catch Public transportation from Shelton into Bridgeport- via Metro north again-not sure of the details.

Apartments should reasonable in Shelton, but also nearby Derby and Ansonia. I would also recommend Milford along the shoreline- a very attractive beach community with a nice town center. Orange is another choice nearby.

Good luck.

Jack,

Welcome to CT!

To get from LaGuardia to CT via public transportation you will need to take the M60 bus from the airport to the Metro-North train station in Manhattan. The bus will take you across the triborough bridge onto 125th Street in Manhattan. You want to get off at 125th street and Park Avenue, here you will find the Metro-North train station.

You will need to take the New Haven line to get out of the city and into CT. The closest you can get to Shelton on the train is Derby. To get to Derby you need to change trains at Bridgeport the problem is the train from Bridgeport to Derby runs every 2 hours(I think?). I know there is a bus from Bridgeport to Derby that probably has more frequent service. Worst case scenario you would have to take a cab from Bridgeport.

Metro-North Commuter train between NYC and CT:
MTA Metro-North

Bridgeport bus system:

Jack - Welcome to Connecticut. I hate to break it to you but where your new company is located is pretty suburban in nature and to get around you really need a car (may be a bike will do). The complex where you will be working is a large office area with little in the way of housing, at least affordable housing. There are a couple apartment/condo complexes nearby but I believe they all are condos. There may be rental in them or a possible share. There is also a new tower being constructed adjacent to that complex but I believe they are very expensive.

To get from Laguardia, you can use Connecticut Limo. I believe they have a website which will tell you where they go to. you may have to take a cab from there to Shelton.

There is bus service along Bridgeport Avenue from Bridgeport to Derby. You could live along that route and use the bus to work but the office is a bit of a walk from Bridgeport Avenue. Good luck, Jay

Thanks Gomet. I visited NYC, with a tourist group...lol..., four years ago. I'm on my own this time and hopefully I can figure my out in the maze-like Grand Central.
Thanks again.
