During his 2009-10 primary campaign for governor, Rick Perry declared, "I don't want to look like Connecticut, no offense, I don't want to look like Oklahoma, I don't want to look like California. I want to be uniquely Texas. And that's not to diss anybody else."

Rick Perry, I don't want to look like TEXAS, no offense

He better not be the R candidate. He and Bachmann are the worst.

Natural for any gov to not want to look like other 49, no matter what state they are from, but unwise for a presidential candidate to name any of the other 49.

He has appeal to a certain demographic in his backyard, but I don't think he will have widespread appeal on the national stage. He is enjoying a bounce right now, mostly because of those jobs numbers he keeps touting, but closer scrutiny about the types of jobs actually being created and the standard of living for those with those jobs will put the lid on that. Moderates who can form a consensus will probably carry the day. Folks in the North East are unlikely to support conservatives with a "moral majority" agenda. We don't really like being told what to do.

What a horrible thing to say! Much better to follow BHO policies where every state looks the same, all people have the same stuff, where the goverment determines what every person deserves, and gives it to them. If it was good enough for the USSR or China, its good enough for US!

Lets get real, this was a governor's campaign speech given a few years ago. He mentioned his neighboring state of OK as well which is one of the most conservative in the nation. So yea, he must really hate those red states as well.

This is nothing more than a "gotcha" article and you all are playing into it. Open your minds and do some critical thinking. And this is not an endorsement for Perry, but for rational objective thinking.

I don't like him, but I see nothing really wrong with this statement.

On second thought i do actually. The policies affect real people in his state, from the people I know that live there with a sense of morality they say in an underhand fashion "thank god for Alabama." If he cared about the people that aren't his donors you would think he'd damned sure want to emulate CT, OK, or yes even CA in many ways.

But I don't feel insulted that he said it as a Connecticutian, he can rail on CT all day and night. I'd rather live here with the option of moving there; than there unable to move here (not true of everyone in TX but indeed a huge swath of the population which I'd likely be in if I were born there).

There's no way Perry will get my vote if he runs in 2012. I want Ron Paul and no one else. Anyone who wants to transform America into a theocracy is an instant no-vote in my book.
