If you want authentic*, Los Molcajetes in Norwalk or Mezcal in New Haven. They are both spectacular in their own ways (Los Molcajetes more casual/street food, Mezcal more restaurant/entree feel).

*Verified by my friend who was born and raised in Mexico City.

Other places to get authentic tacos in CT:

Los Portales in Norwalk, CT
Tacos Mexico in Norwalk, CT
bartaco in Stamford, CT (trendy, but surprisingly authentic!)
Pancho's Tacos in Danbury, CT
Tortilleria La Michoacana in New Haven, CT
Mexicali Rose in Newtown, CT

There's also tons of authentic taco trucks in New Haven, many of which park at Long Wharf. I've never built up the courage to try them (yet).

Bodega Taco Bar in Fairfield has a good concept in theory, but the tacos are expensive for their tiny size. Surprising as his other restaurant (Valencia Luncheria) is amazing and cheap.

Moe's is mediocre at best. I always opt for Senor Salsa (on Post Rd across from Stop & Shop) when I want fast cheap Mexican food. They are going to be in a lot of trouble with Chipotle in town.

That new restaurant on Black Rock Tpke - Mesa - is pretty good. I think it's the 5th restaurant in 5 years, so we'll see if it lasts, but the food was tasty and affordable for a sit-down. And, very kid-friendly.

Because it's gross corporate chain food...same for Chipotle.

To add to Stylo's list.

Mt Alban, El Sarape, in Hartford, Taqueria Tavern in West Hartford, El Mariachi Loco in Manchester to name a few.

I love Chipotle, first had it in California. Been a couple times in CT and New York and mmmmm. Glad there will be one close to my house. I would love to try Puerto Rican food but have no clue where to go. I'm visitng Cali in 2 weeks but will be in southern so no where near San Rafael.

I like Chipotle for a quick fix, I find it pretty solid. I like the burrito bowls for a quick healthy meal (as long as there's no sour cream and cheese, it's actually pretty healthy).

That said, any of the other places listed in this thread are going to have better Mexican food. surfsnowgirl - I really suggest trying some other authentic Mexican places in the area, they are a little hard to find - but are just as good as any Mexican you get in California.
