We have heard and read very mixed opinions on the Middletown school district. Can anyone give me any specific information on whether the middle and high schools are safe and good schools? We like Middletown, but with with two kids, we need good schools. Should we be worreid about sending our kids to this school system? Thanks for the help.

A lot of people in Middletown send their kids to private schools when going towards the uppergrades, I'm not sure they're unsafe, but they are underperforming.

Middletown schools score lower than the state averages in the Connecticut Mastery Tests with only 50% of the 8th grade students meeting the State Goal for reading; 53% for math; and 48% for writing. Class sizes are a bit over 20 students for 5th, 7th and high school grades and just under 20 for kindergarten and 2nd grade. There are a number of towns in the area with better statistics than this. That is why there are a lot of people in Middletown that send their kids to private schools particularly when they get to high school. No one can tell you if your children will be safe. I can not say that my kids will be safe and we live in one of Hartford's most desirable suburbs. Middletown is a very nice community (I lived there for several years), but if schools are a top priority consider another community unless you are willing and able to afford private schools there. I live in Middletown, and can tell you, the grade schools in the Westfield area of town are very nice. We've been pleased. In fact, I just got the test scores this week and my kids who took it, scored very high.

We do not intend to send any of our kids to the middle and high school. There are other options other than private schools-there is Vinal Technical high school (we have one there and are pleased thus far) and there is also the option of magnet schools-we had one child accepted to both the Greater Hartford Classical Magnet and Thomas Edison Magnet (which we chose) for middle school.

For private schools, there are two large Catholic high schools, for boys and girls, and many people who aren't Catholic go there. There is Fellowship school which goes up to 8th I think, and Roadside school.

The Middletown high school is moving into a new building soon-it is supposed to be really nice (it should be, for the bazillion dollars it cost!) but they haven't seemed to plan very well for the relocation of the middle school they plan to demolish.

Personally, I would not let the schools deter me from moving here. We are relocating, but not for school reasons. You just have to plan ahead for the middle years and be pro-active.
