How bad is it going to be? I'm heading to visit family in the Foxborough, MA area and before you ask, no, I can't leave on Tuesday. Luckily I will be able to head out in the morning on Wednesday, though. I've made the drive a few times (they just relocated a year and a half ago) and have had everything from a nightmarish backup that seemed to last the length of the state, to almost no traffic at all. So what I am looking at for Wednesday? Should I take the Merritt or possibly even 84?

I would take 84, to the Mass Pike to 495. 95 is going to be a mess. Always is with holiday traffic. You might bump into some slowdowns on 84 but nothing to make you want to open a vein like 95.

Thanks. My only concern is that 84 to the Mass Pike is fairly out of the way, so it would have to be worth it. Are there any construction projects on 84 right now? I've had trouble with that before.

Avoid 95 and the Merritt. I can't stress that enough.

Tappan Zee to 684 to 84.

84 is your best bet. 95 will start to get really ugly around noon.

Merritt will be fine after the morning rush and just before the afternoon rush, If you can get to bridgeport area by 2pm on the Merritt you should be okay going up 91 (although you'll start to encounter Hartford rush hour after 3pm) You're driving the opposite direction that most of the traffic travels in the morning though so I don't think you'll have a tough time there.

Keep in mind that 84 where it meets the Mass Pike in Sturbridge might be pretty ugly too from my experience......but at least going that way the traffic won't be almost the whole road.

100% correct. I've left work early the day before Thanksgiving around 1PM from Westport/Norwalk the past 4 years and never hit traffic on 95 or Merritt.

While it may look that way, I84 is only 10 mile more than going 95 measuring from Port Chester to Foxborough. You can EASILY eat up 10 minutes in traffic difference. And don't forget you are avoiding Providence as well.

Just FYI.

Easily. 95 can take you as much as two hours longer if you're on it after 1 PM. That's not an exaggeration.

Basically, if you can hit 95 in Greenwich by 11 AM, you should be alright. Anytime after 12 PM, you're looking at big delays.
