I'm gonna be moving at the start of next year to Waterbury. I'm planning to eventually move to NYC, but for the time being I'm gonna be living in my brother's house. I'm 22, from San Juan and recently graduated in film. I will be commuting to NYC for internship/job.

From what I've read in the forum, Waterbury is a boring place. Am I right? If so, I'm looking for entertainment options near Waterbury for people my age. Preferably arts related, or some good nightlife spots. Is New Haven the nearest city for those type of options?

Anyway, just looking for options of what to do in my free time near Waterbury.

That's a long commute. Do you have to do it every day? I suppose New Haven would be the closest place with nightlife for you, so you will surely be spending a lot of time there.

That's going to be a 2 hour commute each way by train. Not fun. If you're getting paid, maybe you can sublet a place in the city.

I'm hoping to commute only 2 days a week. 3 days in a extreme case. 4 hours round trip on train is not great, but I think it beats driving 3 hours round trip. For now, my plan is to do the train thing for 2 to 3 months until I find a steady job and then move to NYC.

Has anyone used the Metro North up to Waterbury? With all that I'm reading about crime on that city, is the train station safe?

Generally safe, yes. If I were you, I'd drive to Bridgeport and take the train from there. The Waterbury line requires a switch in Stamford or Bridgeport.

Yeah, I wouldn't take the train from Waterbury. So slow.

Best nightlife options from there are generally West Hartford, New Haven, Milford (much more vibrant when warm and largely outdoors), Middletown or SoNo/Stamford. New Haven has the most nightlife in the state.

Unfortunately you have to drive 20+ miles for anywhere with a decent scene.

Thanks everybody for your help and advice. I was really worried about being in a boring town, but it now seems I have some options!

The Waterbury train station is NOT safe at all. If you want to take the train on that line drive to Naugatuck and catch it there, or if you want it quicker drive to Bridgeport. If you leave your car for any extended period in the Waterbury train station lot there's a 50/50 shot it will be vandalized. I'd heard how bad it was in the Waterbury lot, but decided it couldn't be for real. So, I went there one time and when I pulled in at least ten cars in the parking lot had there windows smashed out by vandals. I never went back.

I live in Naugatuck, and take the train from Bridgeport when needed. The frequency of trains on the Waterbury Line is the main problem, and also that the last one is not very late. The Bridgeport ones are hourly or better, and it's only a short 30 min drive to there, although you do have to pay for parking.

why Waterbury? You have Bridgeport, Stratford, even New Haven all right on the train line...just as cheap
