Anyone have any advice for my drive from Staten Island to Stamford? I'm not sure how long I will do it but I plan on doing the drive each day in the beginning. I'm not looking forward to it, but the job opportunity was too good to pass up.

I will consider renting a small room to sleep Mondays thru Thursdays to save on the drive and cut gas/tolls costs. I am married with kids, but willing to make the sacrifice.

Thanks

Staten Island to Stamford every day??? My god, I can not think of a harder commute. First to get off the island you must drive into New Jersey, then you would have to cross the Hudson on the GWB into Manhattan and take the Cross-Bronx, all of which is aweful. Then up I-95 into Stamford which also can be a problem in the morning. Mapquest shows it to be 61 miles and 1 hour 20 minutes. I am guessing more like 2 hours or more. I would definitely consider getting a room in Stamford and start looking to relocate as soon as possible. Good luck, Jay

I was thinking the same thing as Jay...granted it is a reverse commute but that is tough. Seriously tough. I would look into corporate apartments or something like that for the weekdays because you will want to take your own life shortly after starting that commute. I would suggest public transportation but your commute would probably be 3 hours long each way.

What are your hours? If you leave at 5am it'll be long but
generally less traffic, later you are dead. Coming home daily will
be awful, especially if there is weather...
Take VB to Brooklyn, Gowanus to BQE,
BQE to Triboro to Bronx, etc.
OR
VB to Belt Pkwy
to Van Wyck
to Whitestone
To 95 into Stamford

I'd have to agree with the previous posters that the commute will be rough. I'd say leave your house by 5am at the latest, to guarantee you can be at work at a reasonable hour. It will partly be a reverse commute but I drive through Stamford and Greenwich every morning and traffic is backed up going in both directions. Mass transit probably won't be less stressful.

My suggestion is to relocate as soon as possible, if you can. While Stamford is extremely expensive, I think it may be less than Staten Island though correct me if I'm wrong.

Good luck!

Man, that's a crazy commute. I'd suggest taking the train--by all means. Unless you can leave super early--like many people said--@ 5am.
I commute by car from Stamford to Williamsburg, Brooklyn most days, and if I leave too late (6:30 or later), I'd say around 80% of the time it will tack on about 1/2 hour!
By train, it would take you about 1 hour and 15 or 20 mins--probably longer. Stamford is only 44 mins from Grand Central. Are you working right downtown? That would make it much, much easier on you in the long run.
As for housing prices, you can purchase a good cape cod 3 or 4 bedroom house in Stamford now for under $550k. Prices have dropped.
