News that the gov't wants to move the USCG Acad. down south. So the school might be closing in New London. Another shock to the down trend of CT and 0% job growth in 22 years

I read about that too. How many more jobs at the school and then the economic multiplier of suppliers etc will be effected?

So sad on West Point will be around up north. Navy&Marines in MD, Airforce is in CO.

It is the headline that the media has been dishing out to sell advertisement. They don't look at the facts. Mooly has been adding to it recently to push his agenda.

We are a low growth state. 22 years ago we were in a booming economy with low unemployment. Today we have a struggling economy with higher unemployment. So when you compare todays numbers with the numbers of 22 years ago you get 0% growth in jobs. The facts are we have an unemployment rate lower than the national average. We have and continue to maintain one of the highest income levels in the country. We are not that bad off.

As for the Coast Guard Academy, it is way too early to say for sure if it will move. Jay

From the look of it, the Coast Gaurd wants to expand the Academy but the locals aren't looking to have that happen but I didn't see where anyone said they were up for relocation.

Dumb statistic. The same goes for the rest of the country, if not worse.

The Coast Guard Academy is not planning on moving out of New London They actually want to stay and expand. They want to buy a portion of Riverside park which is adjacent to the Academy to develop other programs..

However, that plan was voted down by the people of New London. New London is typing to get them to buy other waterfront land in the city. But the Coast Guard wants the contiguous land of Riverside Park.

If they can't get the park, they may move the programs they had planned on expanding into to another location. Right now, it's all up in the air. As for the entire facility moving, not on the horizon.

Is this another one of those not in my backyard deals? Crazy to see people shooting down opportunities like this. CT needs to do a better job maybe not only at the state level but also at the local. With Pfizer dwindling and other military contractors paring down in that area of CT. You would think this would be a win-win to at least have some growth.

The idea is not dead yet, I believe everyone involved is still considering their options.

The referendum only lost by 19 votes, so that may be revisited again. The people against it were of the opinion that the price was too low , the Coast Guard wanted land from the only northern park in the city and there was no green space replacement considered.

And the big sticking point was the Coast Guard already has almost 19 other contiguous acres of its own ( not part of the current facility) with which it is doing nothing. It's just sitting there. More than enough room for its expansion using its own land or so thinks the opposition.

We'll see what happens- lots of discussion going on in Washington with CT's two senators, the city officials and the Coast Guard.

As a retired Coast Gaurd Captain and working at the USCGA presently I should have an idea what is going on...
