Keeping up with the Jones' is very visible in Madison. Senseless competition and a rather apparent "chip". That is not what I think of in terms of laid-back.

Mike: spot on. Very similar to Greenwich. Which is sort of the role Madison plays as the most affluent town in NH county.

I am sorry but that attitude is found in any affluent suburb of a major city. Even Wilton has people with this attitude. Most people I know from Madison are not that way AT ALL. They are hard working professionals. I also know a couple of people who are working class there. I have been to Madison for sporting events as well and found the people to be as nice as any town. There are definitely more affluent people there than in other towns but I don't think it is any snootier. JMHO, Jay

Actually, that's Woodbridge.

It is totally untrue that Madison is a snooty town...and Madison is NOTHING like Greenwich (thank god). I live in the general south-central shoreline area and am frequently in Madison...the area is full of fun people who like summer and the coast/beach. In fact, when summer is here Madison can be one of the most fun towns in a rather boring state. People in Madison and in the shoreline towns east of New Haven in general move at a whole different pace than people in SW Connecticut...and take their job/career far less seriously.

By beach, do you mean the Hammonasset State Park? If it costs $40 for a beach pass, maybe that was a season pass. If you meant Hammonasset, then other state beaches would probably cost a lot for out-of-state folks.
As for snooty people, wow, maybe we met different people! That keeping up with the Jones would be found in many places in CT.

Absolutely true!! I've gotten that feeling since I moved here 10 months go. I live east of NH and work in Fairfield.

$40 daily weekend beach pass for non-residents at the town beaches per the Madison town website. Same as Darien and more than Greenwich. For reference, Clinton charges $25 and Hammonasset is $9 for CT residents.

Compo Beach in Westport is $50. Obviously they're not seeking outsiders.
