Hi all,

I'm moving to New Haven this summer and I'm extremely confused.

I am moving in with my family (includes 1yr old)

So far

1) Checked out wintergreen at westville. Great place from outside but I've heard very bad reviews!
2) Anybody knows about Cooper place in Westville (West Gate Town House complex). It borders Woodbridge.. The apartments are older but I liked the neighbourhood. But my online search lead me to the news of arrest of New england rapist from the same complex in 2011!!!
3) I also looked at apt. in exchange street NH bordering Fairhaven.

Please advise. I prefer to be in 15-20 min to YNHH

15-20 from YNHH gives you a ton of options. What's your budget? You could consider Branford and Milford too as family friendly towns. Also Hamden (especially Whitneyville) and North Haven. Westville is very nice but I'm not sure about those complexes. I would not recommend living on Exchange Street. Crime is higher there. You might also want to consider East Rock in New Haven.

I don't think that Exchange Street is that great. In New Haven stick to Westville, downtown or East Rock. I agree with Stylo that you might want to consider one of the nearby towns. Branford and Milford are very nice. I am not sure what you will get though for $1500. Good luck, Jay

Nothing over the "Q" bridge is within 15-20 minutes of YNHH during rush hour. So really just don't even look at Branford.

Getting from I-95South into downtown via Long Wharf is a crapshoot in getting you to and from within 20 minutes, unless you're right off the Kimberly Avenue exit at the West Haven border.

I think a lot of people forget that the commute time includes getting from the house to the highway.

For this reason, I would also avoid Foxon up Rte 80 off I-91 North.

However, Hamden has some decent newish condos and apartments on State Street near Ridge Hill School, and that's just a hop-skip from both I-91 and Rte 15; around 20 minutes total to the Air Rites garage during rush hour.

Past the Foxon exit is North Haven, which is even faster (I know, it doesnt make sense but that's just how it is), prices tend to be lower, and traffic more tolerable. Plus there's lots and lots of parking in North Haven, on and off street, and a few different bus routes run through the main drag.

Westville is awesome, so is East Rock. If you wanted to skip car ownership and go for hard-core urban living, you could look for something downtown but quality/size would be limited at your price range.

This is not true at all, and you're just adding to the hype that getting over the Q during rush hour is impossible. I do it everyday. So does my wife. On most days, I'm crossing the bridge at 7:30 going 60 the entire way. My wife hits the bridge either at 6:45 or 8ish and rarely has issues. The worst recent trip was when the TT crashed going northbound, and it took me an extra few minutes (maybe an extra 5) to get to the other side.

Without traffic, Branford is 11 minutes from New Haven. During rush hour, it's 13 minutes.

It doesn't sound like you *ever* make this trip, otherwise you wouldn't be making such claims.

As I said:

I used to live in East Haven. I also used to work in Guilford, when I was living in North Haven. I know the route backward and forward, can do it in my sleep, know all the different alternative routes to and from and around. There isn't a high enough salary to get me to do it again during rush hour.

Default resident

My wife is a resident at yale new haven hospital, and this is what we decided on:

For her first year, she chose to live in hamden at town walk drive apartments, about 15 minutes drive from yale along I-91. Hamden is particularly popular among residents. 1274$/month for a 1 bedroom. this is on the high side for apartments in hamden.

We are planning to move to milford since I am going to be a resident at Norwalk hospital. This will be about 10 minutes to yale along I95. Homes here start around 200k and up.

If you are an attending, apparently guilford is popular among yale physicians. Orange is a good choice as well.

I disagree with this. Within New Haven itself you have Morris Cove which is almost right off the Q. If that's jammed, you can just shoot over the Tomilson and you're just a few minutes from Downtown. Great neighborhood too, very safe, family-oriented and some beautiful park lands nearby. Definitely more "vanilla" than East Rock or Westville and less places to rent but worth a look in my opinion.
