Here are some extra curricular activities at Old Lyme High. These are in addition to the usual sports programs that every system has

Region 18: Student Life

Here is a snapshot of the science program at East Lyme High- just happened to pick science

East Lyme Public: Science

If you have a motivated and interested student , there is plenty to do and there are plenty of AP classes for those good students. Of course, as you are finding out, not everyone has a motivated child . Some kids just go around whining, " there's nothing to do" and mom and dad believe them and some parents think their little darling is so special that nothing is ever good enough. What school systems did those people recommend ?

Both systems have extensive on-line information. Get into their websites and read for yourself. These are the two best school systems in New London county, by far. Nothing else compares. If you don't pick one of these, then you're back to Madison and Guilford.

By the way, someone noted a subdivision called " Spinnaker" in Old Lyme ( actually it's in the Niantic section of East Lyme ). While newer and pretty, those open, airy homes are actually free standing condominiums in an over 55 community. But there is other newer and new construction in East Lyme in that same price range.

I am not sure who is telling you this but East Lyme schools perform well above the state averages on the Connecticut Mastery and Copnnecticut academic Performance Tests. The class sizes are reasonable and it offers programs comparable to other towns its size. Check the link below for more information.

Most of the towns in this area are small and therefore have smaller schools. This can be a good thing since your child will not get lost in a sea of students. I do not know what school system this person feels is better but keep in mind that larger is not necessarily better. JMHO, Jay

Thanks - the Orchards in East Lyme is a very nice development, but seems to have several Pfizer relocations happening. The prices have dropped 30%-35% or more there since the market peak, while Madison and Guilford seem to have dropped much less overall. Similarly, while prices where we are now (Farmington Valley CT) have dropped, it seems they're more in the 10-20% range from the market peak. So, the price drop is a bit of a concern as well.

and, they recommended Madison or Glastonbury, though Madison is 30-40 minutes depending on location and even South Glastonbury is 40-45 minutes away.

The home prices in The Orchards should have dropped ! They were astronomical for the town for the at that time. IMHO the whole subdivision was grossly over priced when it was first built. That's when you saw those prices. It seems everyone who bought was from out of state- maybe enchanted by the idea of a home owner association, pool, tennis , clubhouse or just clueless about the area and willing to overpay.. Who knows.

The original developer could never sustain the development at that price point , thus it was never finished. Current home construction with a different builder is more in line with reality of similar homes in town. Keep in mind The Orchards has a home owner association fee which is small right now. However, I don't know if the there is a HOA association yet. The builder may still be in charge of it. When one is formed the fees may be much higher. There are also sewer assessments attached to homes in the development. You might want to check what those are.

For similar type homes, check out the Village Dr. area., Jeremy Dr., Joshua Valley area and Applewood Commons area to name a few. There are others. Prices overall in East Lyme, have not dropped greatly over the past several years. That one development has dropped a lot, not the town. And yes, The Orchards needs to clear out the horde of Pzfer relocation homes, now or soon to be on the market before it gets back to normal. That development is a unique situation, not indicative of the town or region as a whole.

Glastonbury to New London is almost 50 miles but could be many miles more depending upon where in Glastonbury a home is located. Glastonbury has a lot of land area. Much of the drive there is non-highway, which would slow things up . It's way too, too far to live. It could be close to a 60 minute commute each way.

Hi there
I live in westbrook, which has a great school system for a small town. Really any school along the shoreline is good..have lived here and gone to school on shoreline myself. Madison is pretty good although for a wealthy town the schools should be better. Old saybrook and East lyme some of the better ones. Have heard from many friends who are educators that clinton is good but has problems in middle school. I wouldn't recommend any towns farther than maybe Waterford. Good luck!
