I will be purchasing a home in CT very soon and have looked at homes in 55+ communities in East Hampton, Rocky Hill and East Hartford. I am retired so schools are not an issue for me but I want to choose a safe town with easy access to shopping and medical care as necessary. Also, I want to be no more than approximately 15-18 minutes to Glastonbury/Hartford if at all possible. I would appreciate thoughts and info on the three towns mentioned above and recommendations for best choice. Thanks.

Depending where you live in EHampton, it will be tight to get to Glastonbury in 15 minutes (I am assuming Glastonbury center, not the far reaches of South Glastonbury). I don't think Hartford is doable in 15 minutes from anywhere in EHampton, though maybe from a few select locations. I live on the Marlborough/Glastonbury line and I am about 12 minutes from Glastonbury center and exactly 20 minutes from downtown Hartford (with no traffic). As for shopping, I am not sure what kind of stores you are looking for, but other than a Stop and Shop, hardware store and other small stores (liquor stores, garden shop, etc.), you'll have to hit the road to find clothing, big box retailers and the like. You have medical care in the form of a short drive to a 24 hour emergency center in Marlborough and depending what part of town you are in, the nearest full service hospital will be in Hartford or Middletown. If I were you, I'd exclude EHampton...not that there is anything wrong with the town, I just don't think it matches your criteria on most counts.

As for EHartford vs. Rocky Hill...very different towns but both offer quick/easy access to Hartford, Glastonbury, medical care, and any shopping/store you can think of. EHartford will be significantly cheaper due to the school system (which tends to drive real estate prices) and it is a more blue collar/industrial town. Rocky Hill is more typical suburb with some office parks. Some areas of EHartford are definitely tired looking and shoddy but there are also some lovely neighborhoods and the town as a whole is not unsafe or crime ridden. You can drive around both towns and easily see the difference in the two and see what may suit you best.

I agree with Mels. East Hampton is a nice town but further than you want to be from Hartford. East Hartford is very convenient but as Mels noted has some tired looking areas. Rocky Hill is a very nice town and my favorite of the three. It is very clean and well kept and has all of what you are looking for including good shopping. You will however pay more for a home here than in East Hartford or East Hampton. Your call on which suits you better. Jay

I would sacrifice the very small amount of extra time it would take you to get to Glastonbury and go with East Hampton. East Hartford, nada; old and tired and not too nice. Rocky Hill is ok, can be insane at rush hour on main arteries. The only thing about East Hampton is your proxmity to RT 2. That will define your choice there. The closer to 2 the faster to Gbury.

I don't agree that Rocky Hill arteries are bad during rush hour. Certainly no worse than Route 66 in East Hampton. Plus Rocky Hill is closer to Hartford. Jay

If you didn't need the easy access to shopping and medical care, then I would have said East Hampton, but instead I think Rocky Hill would be the right choice based on those criteria. There are many nice neighborhoods in Rocky Hill, and it has the convenience you'll need for those services. East Hartford is variable when it comes to safety, and I just think you'd have a better community in Rocky Hill.

East Hartford is definitely the most convenient. There are many nice areas with great bargains. You mentioned you want to be close to Glastonbury. Why not look in Glastonbury? There may not be a 55+ community that is in your price point but how about a small home or condo?

Three completely different towns in regard to feel, culture, housing etc.

Knowing what you are looking for would be a big help. I vote for East Hampton if you want a nice peaceful New England town but Rocky Hill is nice if you want a suburb and strip malls within 5-10 minutes.

There is one more affordable 55+ community in Glastonbury but they may not like the location next to a couple of major highways. There may even be some more affordable units in a few other complexes as well. The only thing is taxes will likely be higher. Jay
