We are currently looking to buy our first home. I am working in Glastonbury and DW is working in Norwalk.

We have decided after extensive house hunting that the Fairfield county, New haven county (which would be geographically suitable) is not for us...considering the fact that comparable sized-aged houses are cheaper in the Hartford county.
We will like to move more towards the Hartford area and the Towns we are thinking about are :
Glastonbury, Rocky Hill, Wethersfield and Cromwell.
Middletown (If we buy here.. we will have to move eventually for better schools and that scenario is atleast 5-6 years away)

Assuming there is a possibility of her commuting 3 days a week.. and working from home rest of the time.
Is it totally insane to do that commute for 6-8 months (she needs that time to look for and make a switch)?

Is it better to wait (hope the housing market will not significantly appreciate)??

Thanks in advance.

I think Wallingford(yeah, i know, it's NHC) would be the practical limit for your DW's commute. And that's pushing it. Move to HFC when she gets a job there. IMHO.

Why not just stay in Milford for the time being? It's the perfect location for both of you and you have great access to both 95 and 15.

How is Wallingford as a town any safety issues??

Right - but why not stay there? That's about halfway.

I don't get it- why move at all right now? If your wife is looking for a new job, why not wait until she finds a job, then depending on where she is working, make a move. If she gets a job in the Hartford area, you could then just live in Glastonbury and not have to move for schools in a few years.

I would not live any further than Milford for a Norwalk commute. Glastonbury is much easier to commute to.

Seriously though, Milford isn't so much more expensive than Hartford County that it's worth the compromise. The better towns in Hartford County are pretty close in price. I'm not sure why you are expecting it to be drastically cheaper in Hartford County vs. New Haven County, it's just not the case.

The difference is negligible compared to the drastic difference in commute time.

I think you should stay where you are. The housing market isn't going anywhere for a very long time.

It sounds to me like you really just want to live in Hartford County. I agree with the others that you should just stay where you are until your DW finds a job closer to where you want to settle down permanently.

If you still want to buy, I do like the suggestion of Wallingford. It is not the most upscale of towns but it is nice and reasonably priced and your wife could still commute down to Norwalk. I do not think that I would go further north than that unless your wife finds a new job closer. Another option may be North Haven. Jay
