My general rule of thumb is if someone passes you/me in the right or middle lane - that's a sign that you/I shouldn't be in the left. Pride becomes the issue. How dare the other driver think he has more right to the road or is in more than a hurry than I am!
I drive back and forth between Hartford and Fairfield county every day and I agree that the tailgating/rude driving is worse in Fairfield County than further north in the state. Tailgating seems to be some people's default way to drive. My husband drives the other direction into New York; he feels that the driving gets marginally less aggressive when you cross the border into New York. His nickname for the Fairfield County stretch of road is, "The Entitlement Zone".

Ytlh... I feel the opposite way. I live in Norwalk and drive between Fairfield and Greenwich most of my time in this area. Whenever I cross the border into NY to either go to White Plains or JFK.. my blood pressure rises significantly. 95 can be wild at 3am on a Sunday, insane at all other times. However the things I experience on the Van Wick expressway tops anything 95 has ever thrown at me.
But to agree with others, I came from Glastonbury and moving to FFC was a rude awakening to how bad driving can get. I think I drive sufficiently for the conditions. I don't let others scare me out of a lane, I move b/c I'm a nice guy.
If I'm in the left lane and someone is coming up fast behind me I will go to the right lane if there's an opening. If there's no opening and someone decides to tailgate me, I will hit the brakes and slow down.

Do us all a favor and stop driving like an ass.
