I’ll be driving to Lancaster, PA from Hartford on Friday after work (5:00 PM) so I am wondering if the brunt of the holiday traffic would likely be tomorrow night?

I have no idea since the 4th is on a Wednesday this year.

Thanks guys

Most of the traffic stretches from NYC to the eastern CT shoreline. You shouldn't encounter much in the way of additional traffic.

I'll be taking the Tapanzee Bridge but am wondering to get there if it'd be better to take I-84 to 684 to 287W or to take I-91 to the Merritt/Hutchinson Pkwy.

The latter route is a bit longer, but if it has a lot less traffic, it'd be worth it.

Thanks

You are headed in the opposite direction of the beach traffic, which has nothing to do with the holiday next week. Every summer weekend the traffic crawls out of NJ and NY onto I-95 north (east) along the shoreline, with the usual droves of people headed to shore points in CT, RI and the Cape. Happens every weekend in the summer like clockwork.

I think 84 to 684 to 287 is the safer bet. Merritt/Hutch will have Stamford/Greenwich traffic. You're still going to hit traffic around the Tappan Zee not matter which way you go.

I doubt that the Wednesday holiday will have much to do with it, but I suspect if you are leaving that early you will run into a rush hour mess to some degree no matter what route you take. However, I strongly suspect that the route 84 choice will be quicker.

It's tricky when the 4th is on a Wednesday. Many people just can't get the time off. Others take the entire week and go away (as I am fortunately able to this year). Others I guess pick one weekend or the other to attach to the 4th. But I would think NEXT weekend may be the more "vacation-oriented" one as fireworks occur at night on Wednesday and then people would otherwise have to go right to bed and to work the next day. I noticed where we're going (northeast PA) that a lot of "weekend" oriented 4th activities are being held NEXT weekend, not this. So I think traffic in general will be lighter as it will be more staggered than when the 4th comes other days of the week that point to an obvious weekend.

I hope that helps. Enjoy and have a happy 4th!
