The express trains actually vary between 81-86 minutes. If you're talking 75 minutes from Fairfield or 10 minutes extra, it's all equally pretty bad. That said, everyone has their own tolerances and I would never want to be on a train for more than 45 minutes personally.

Thank you. We will definitely look only as far as Fairfield. I don't think he will be able to stand any farther a commute. An hour, or maybe a tad more, is tolerable considering his commute driving to LA right now is an hour going to work, and close to two hours coming home each day.

We plan to rent for the first year or so anyway just to get the feel of the areas we like. I know now not to look past FF.

When I first moved to the area everything I read on this forum and others pointed to the town of Fairfield. I work in Stamford, so the commute there was ideal. Living around folks who commuted to NYC it became apparent that FF is just about the furthest 'bearable' commute. Remember to add on subway times once you get into the city.

FF is definitely more affordable than Southport, Westport, Stamford and Greenwich. Some areas of Norwalk my be a little cheaper, but FF's big advantage is that you're never very far from the train line - especially now that there are two stations in the town. FF schools are very good too.

I really enjoyed living in FF. We rented and were in a great spot for the train and the beaches (off Mill Plain Road). Buying a home was another matter. We made the move inland beyond Danbury to find the home we wanted at the right price. I wouldn't advise commuting to the City from here.... :-)

Good luck.

Fairfield is much more than a "tad more" than an hour door to door to NYC.

Yes, even Fairfield to Manhattan is L.O.N.G.

If you can afford it, I wouldn't go much past Darien.

Since he's working on the west side, he's going to have a bit of a commute once he gets to the city too (Grand Central is on the East Side. I'd recommend Greenwich or Darien if you can swing it. Otherwise, try Westchester County, NY - esp if you're renting. The downside with Westchester is the taxes, which won't be a factor for you.
