Hello Everyone.

I am being transferred to work in the New London area (Coast Guard Academy), and I have never been in Connecticut at all before. So my question is - Where to live?

I am a 31-yr-old male, single, and looking for 1 or 2 bedroom apartment or small home for rent. I just don't know which city/town would be best.

I love the outdoors - but I don't want to be completely secluded either - as I am a single guy and would like to be near social scenes (not a huge partier, but some cool bars nearby would be nice, and some single women

I'm also an artist, so any town with some sort of cool art scene/music/galleries would also be nice.

Can anyone help with some guidance on some good towns to check out, or which ones to avoid? Any advice/help is greatly appreciated!!!

Cory

Good luck in CT. We have some of the most uptight girls ever here!! Do you have a uniform? that might help!

You prob wouldn't be looking here, but stay far away from Fairfield county!

Default Ha.

Haha. I do have a uniform - I'm in the Coast Guard, but don't particularly like being around a lot of military people off hours - So I'm not looking to live where all the other Coast Guard or Navy people live, unless that's just unavoidable.

But thanks for the heads up!

The only town in that area with any kind of art or music scene would be New London itself with places such as the Hygenic Art Gallery and the El N Gee Club. There are a lot of seedy areas in New London, though. Stay as close to Ocean Beach as possible!

Fairfield County is like (especially with all the traffic LOL!) up to 2 hours away from New London, why the heck would he be looking here

From what I've heard (I had a friend who worked for Electric Boat a few years ago who said this about the area) most of the military presence in the area is married anyway.....good luck!

Groton, New London and Gales Ferry do have a lot of military people. Mystic is nice also, but more expensive. In the other direction, Waterford is nice, and to the east, Old Lyme is an arty area. I think you will find the area enjoyable.

Thanks for the replies - I think I will enjoy the area as well. It seems like a great place; Especially coming from the Los Angeles area, I'm looking forward to a slower pace, and less congestion.

I'm more interested in maybe "less traditional" apartments, vs. big, bland apartment complexes (if this makes any sense). I'd rather rent out the upper floor above an old storefront in one of these little coastal towns, or a small cottage thing, than be stuck like a hamster in a big building with lots of tenants (and noise!). So I'm hoping when I get there in a few weeks I can just drive around and hopefully spot some "for rent" signs in great, off beat locations. Thanks for the help!

Sorry for so many additional posts on my own thread here haha - but I've looked into various towns and commuting distances and I have a short list here - Any pros/cons to these towns from those who have been there is greatly appreciated. Here's the list in no particular order:

Westerly, RI (only about 20 min from New London, i've heard good things, cool bars? small art/music scene?)
Norwich, CT
Niantic, CT
Stonington, CT
Mystic, CT

Thanks again!

Norwich has some very rough areas, and I'd suggest only the north side of downtown. I like Westerly a lot. Niantic is mostly residential, I think. Stonington's downtown is very interesting to visit, but I'm not sure it's affordable. Mystic is a great tourist town, and you might find some affordable places in one floor of an old house.

In general, look for rentals on Realtor.com for more interesting places. (Mystic shows up as either Groton or Stonington in Realtor searches, depending on which side of the river you are on; they are equally interesting.) BTW, Pawcatuck is also a good place to look for rentals; it's between Stonington and Westerly.

Old Saybrook is a nice town, great beach there...what town is rocky neck state park in?
Waterford is a nice mellow area. I liked it there. Westerly's quite nice and its got small a/p there too with little restaurant.

think New London's cool town as far as music goes. heard their crime rate is growing, is that true?
