So I'm trying to do research on areas near New Haven to move to. I got a teaching position at a catholic school in New Haven. I'm willing to commute up to 30 minutes a day. Here is what I'm looking for

Recently married- lesbian couple in early 30's
Rental community that allows dogs and has a washer dryer inside the unit.
Rent maximum is 1350$ a month plus utilities
Would like to live near shopping such as walmarts, food stores, malls ect..
We would like a newer apartment complex as well

We currently live in Long Island, NY.

The towns that I have researched that I found to be "good" are:

Hamden
Milford
Orange
Shelton
Stratford

ANY and all advice needed as I have to move in less then 4 weeks! Thank YOU

Hamden and Milford will probably have the most complexes. Hamden is certainly cheaper, but your budget allows for a newer 1BR in Milford too. Check out Spinnaker apartments: http://www.spinnakerapartments.com/

Milford will have the most shopping, dining options, recreation, etc. of the towns you mentioned.

You really can't go wrong with any of them, but for towns like Orange - there's not much in the way of rentals. Shelton and Stratford are great, but I'm not sure there's any point in living further out if you don't have to. It's not like you're saving drastic amounts of money to do so.

I too would not bother with Shelton and Stratford-- no need to go that far. Milford will be the most expensive area but has the plus of having great beaches. Hamden has tons of rentals in both apartments and condo complexes. Plenty of shopping in Hamden.

You might also want to check out North Haven , which also has many rentals and all the big box stores, plus lots of other shopping. Very nice, very safe town.

Work with a real estate agent as there is no fee to you. They can help you narrow down your choices. You will be able to find places that permit a dog, However, be forewarned that those that do accept dogs, may have a weight limit and breed bans in place.

Good luck

I'd focus on Hamden first. Milford and North Haven are good, but they will be more expensive. You can eliminate Orange. You won't find what you're looking for there.

I absolutely would add West Haven to your list. There are plenty of nice areas in WH, it's diverse, reasonably affordable, and access to New Haven is great. The running joke on this board is to call West Haven "Waste Haven", but i don't believe that to be a fair characterization. Take a look for yourself and decide.

I would suggest Milford over Hamden. It is a nicer town with more to offer you. If you can't find a nice place within your budget there, then look into Hamden. JMHO, Jay

What about Branford? I would argue that Branford likely has more condo complexes than both Milford and Hamden. There are a TON scattered all over town.

It's also close to big box shopping, restaurants, VERY close to downtown New Haven to take advantage of all it has to offer. There is a beautiful little downtown to take a stroll.

It's essentially a smaller Milford - though the shoreline of Branford is rocky and scenic whereas Milford's is more sandy.

Thompson Gardens West, in East Haven (the Foxon area). It's a big condo complex, and whether or not dogs are allowed depends on the owner of the unit who's renting it out. The complex itself does allow dogs. It's right off Rte 80 (and in fact when I used to live there, the supermarket was just a back-path around the side parking lot of one of the buildings, into the parking lot of Waldbaum's. Waldbaum's has since closed, but Aldi's is right down the street).

The downside of living in TGW: Having to deal with Rte 80 to and from work. Also, though the plowing companies do a damned fine job, they're not miracle workers and the main driveway through the complex is on an incline. Sometimes - cars get stuck in the snow.

The upside: it's relatively inexpensive for what you're getting, has really very pretty grounds that are kept in good shape (it was originally a horse farm), and the complex manager lives in the complex and so has a personal interest in keeping the place in good condition.

The "ranch" condos are 2 bedrooms with an eat-in kitchen, lots of counter space, a living/dining combination area, a laundry room, 1 full (but small) bathroom, and the master bedrooms are a pretty generous size (if I remember right, it was 14x15). Parking is in the lots outside each building. Each "ranch" building is 8 condos per building; 2 on bottom and 2 on top, facing one direction, and the same facing the opposite direction. Second floor units have little balconies.

The "townhouse" condos are, if I remember, 2 bedrooms on the "third" floor - living/dining/kitchen on the "2nd" floor with a balcony off the living area, and a 1-car garage with a small room behind the garage, under the unit, which can be used as a laundry room or as a small office. Some people have their laundry in the garage. Townhouses also have parking spaces in lots outside their buildings. Townhouses are, I believe, 4 or 6 units per building, side by side. I -think- they have an extra half-bath on the lower level, but I lived in a ranch and only saw the inside of the townhouses a few times.

You'd need to find a realtor who specializes in condo rentals, because these condos are not for rent by the association; they're for rent by the individual unit owners and they don't always advertise.

East Haven school systems suck, but if you and your partner aren't planning on having children, it won't matter

Keep in mind that usually people who have good things to say don't post reviews online. People who have a bone to pick are more likely to vent their frustrations.

I would visit complexes that interest you and talk to current residents in person. See what they think.

In New Haven, a good place is the Strouse Adler apartment complex on Olive St in the Wooster Square area adjacent to downtown; they allow dogs. There is a new dog run park opening across the street and the beautiful Wooster Square park and New Haven Green are each a few blocks a way in opposite directions.
