I am a 24 year old male from DC and just accepted a position with Espn and am currently staying in bristol. I have done a little bit of research on this site and see that the areas with the most nightlife(interested in clubs and bars with people around the same age) seem to be New haven and West Hartford? CAn any of you suggest which area you think is better and why? I was leaning towards New Haven but have gotten alot of bad responses from the locals I have spoken to about the area being dangerous... Thanks for the help!

Hi ace,

Both New Haven and W. Hartford are great for a young person. If you're working at ESPN in Bristol, living in New Haven would mean a longer commute but the city's downtown area can't be beat. It's a huge area and IMO it's the state's best downtown. New Haven does have some bad areas, but not where the nightlife is. W. Hartford has the center, as well as the Park Road district and Elmwood Center. All of these areas are good spots for young people. It's closer to ESPN and, while safer overall compared to New Haven, it's also more subdued.

You may also want to consider Middletown - lots of young people here and a ton of great restaurants and bars. They've cleaned up Main Street alot & it keeps getting better. Check it out.

New Haven isn't what it used to be? True, it used to be a lot worse.

Exactly. It's better than it even was 5 years ago, when it was much better than it was 10 years ago, when it was exponentially better than it was 20 years ago.

In the last 6 months ALL of the Crown Street bar strip has filled up (with 3 new bars), and most of the ninth square district is now occupied. Downtown is on a constant upward trajectory and will only grow more with GCC opening its campus soon.

Despite what you may have heard, you're not going to be hanging out in the dangerous areas. If you are, that's just plain stupid. Downtown/East Rock/Upper State Street has crime but no more than any other highly urbanized area. West Hartford is more of a vibrant, large town center - New Haven is a real city. West Hartford is great but doesn't have the variety or quantity.

I normally recommend living as close to your job as possible however for you I would recommend living in the West Lake section of Middletown which is right off I-91 and Route 9. There are tons of apartments in the area and will provide you with reasonable access to Bristol and still give some nightlife nearby in downtown Middletown, West Hartford or New Haven when you want. You probably want to look in either Middletown or West Hartford. I would not commute from New Haven to ESPN in Bristol.

I suggest you stay in Bristol for awhile since housing there is a lot cheaper then most areas. Drive around the state, talk to your colleagues, since some of them were in the same boat as you are now. Then make the decision.

Nightlife? I had a few cocktails after work with friends. Does that count?
