I've started to ask around at my future place of employment and it seemed like few people live in Danbury. Especially Litchfield, thats a bit of a drive. And Patterson NY was such a rural, unremarkable place that I wonder if she just didn't live there already but found a job in Danbury.

What's the farthest you'd ever commute to Danbury?

It could be just the people there. By far most people who work in Danbury live in Danbury (over 18,000) according to CERC. This is followed by New Milford, Bethel, Brookfield, New Fairfield, Newtown, Bridgeport, Stamford, Norwalk and Southbury. Litchfield and Patterson are not on the top ten list. Jay

Litchfield or Litchfield County? They're often mistaken. If it's just Litchfield County, that's not necessarily a bad commute.

The mailman for our office lives up in Litchfield. He likes the country setting up there and I think his wife's family lives up there. My mother said at her old job people came from Bridgeport and Waterbury.

Only you can decide what is an acceptable commute for you. You'll be working at the prison and asking colleagues where they live based upon that place of employment. Many of those people living in the more outlying areas, may be living there as some towns in Litchfield county and in NY state may have much more affordable homes than those in the immediate Danbury area.

It's all going to depend on your budget and what you expect to get for it. I wouldn't worry about what other people are doing, Pick a spot based on your needs and what your commute tolerance is.

The farthest I'd live is Southbury - which is only about 20 minutes away.

I can't help but think that awareness of alternate routes is a factor, too. Connecticut has its horrific driving, and it has its pleasant driving. I know someone who did a Danbury area/Patterson commute for years that way. I did southern Litchfield to Norwalk for a while that way. Probably took a little longer, but it was pretty and considerably less rage-inducing than Route 7...
