Can somebody please point out some negatives/drawbacks to Brookline, MA so that I can stop envying it? Is there anything better about living in Fairfield County, CT rather than in Brookline?
I was going to move this but then read it carefully and realized what you were asking. I will say Brookline is a nice town but it is not any nicer than the Fairfield County suburbs of Greenwich, Darien, New Canaan or Westport. I would even venture to say Fairfield is as nice. It is not so much that anything is wrong with Brookline, it is more that there are equally nice towns with their own character in Fairfield County. That said the Fairfield County towns have one big advantage over Brookline and that is their proximity to what is certainly one of the world's greatest cities. Boston is nice but it is not New York.
It sounds like you are considering a move and want reasons to like Fairfield County as much as Brookline. I think you need to ask yourself what is it about Brookline that you like and does Fairfield County offer similar amenitities. I think you will realize that all of these towns are great places to live and should be appreciated for what they have to offer. Jay

Yeah, you are right Jay (I also posted this in the MA forum, by the way). What I most would like to love about Fairfield County is the same level of walkability and proximity to the city as Brookline. I agree that Boston is no NYC, but on the other hand, the commute from FFC to NYC is no 10 minute T-train ride from Brookline to Back Bay either. Also, I love that Brookline has such a big Russian community. It seems like in CT, the only comparable area in that respect is West Hartford, which is of course very far from NYC.

Then it sounds like you should be looking a closer in New York suburbs. Have you looked at Westchester or Long Island? Jay
A bit, but haven't found anything there that has walkeability at all. My husband's family lives in CT, so it would also be a drawback to be that far away from them. Did you have recommendations for specific communities in Westchester/Long Island?
Brookline is more urban than most of FFC except Stamford and Bridgeport. More densely settled and more pedestrian friendly. There really is not a bad section of Brookline and it is not dominated by college kids.
It does have a high Jewish population but that is a non issue really.
Brookline is just plain more urban than most places in CT. Again, if you don't count affluence as a factor, East Rock/Wooster Square in New Haven has the closest similar "feel".
You're right next door to a big city too, instead of an hour away.
Fairfield County is very different. One plus is the winters are less harsh.
