My husband is looking at a job in Shelton, CT. We are currently living out of Ct and do not know much about the area. We have a three year old and one on the way so school districts are very important to us. We would like a four bedroom house with a nice backyard in a nice neighborhood. Does anyone have any suggestions for towns to look at? Thanks

We would need to know your budget and your likes and dislikes in a community. Shelton itself is a nice town. Adjacent Trumbull is also nice with schools that perform better. Oxford is also nice with newer homes at a more reasonable price. Milford is a nice shoreline town with a wide range of housing options. Orange and Woodbridge have excellent schools and some nice suburban to semi rural areas. I hope this helps. Jay

Budget? More or less dense? Coastal or woods? Quiet or more activity? Vibrant downtown/town center important or not?

I don't really know our budget yet. My husband is finishing up his orthopedic fellowship and he has not signed a contract yet. I would like a town that is close enough to conveniences. I would love a small downtown, but that is not necessary. The most important things are schools and family friendly.

Budget dictates a lot as these towns vary widely in price, mostly dictated by proximity to NYC. For instance - if your budget is $750,000, Fairfield might be a good option - If $400,000 is your budget, perhaps Shelton or Milford.

None of the towns mentioned have schools that should be balked at in anyway.

There are lots of great towns in the area. It depends on what you can spend.

The more developed towns in the region with good schools and lots of amenities are (in order of price - highest to lowest):

Fairfield
Trumbull
Milford
Orange
Stratford (schools can be iffy, but not bad)
Shelton
Seymour

The more rural towns in the region with good schools and still not far from amenities are (in order of price - highest to lowest):

Easton
Woodbridge
Newtown
Monroe
Oxford
Bethany
Beacon Falls

If you're looking for a high end town, look at Westport (but you have to have a budget of $900k+).
