that place in torrington looks PERFECT, thank you!! it's been on the market for 2 years, too. we will definitely be checking it out when we go up there next month if it's still on the market, and if we like what we see we might be moving sooner than expected!

I saw the little one with 2.5 acres in Torrington online too. There were no interior pics. I wonder what it is like inside.

yeah, that's definitely a big question. it's always a red flag when there are no interior pictures. but we are willing to put in some work to make a place liveable, especially when it's on a piece of land like that.

it also wouldn't be that big of a deal to bump out the attic to double the useable living space.

My worst fears would be that is damp and moldy, and that the interior walls all have to be replaced. However, it's near a lake, and if you get a water view by clearing trees, it could be worth fixing.

FWIW, my brother says the market has been slow in Torrington even with dropped prices, so the house probably won't be sold when the OP's get there.

If that house is off the market, there's another on 1.9 acres at $85,000 on Brandy Hill Road. It's dated but livable, and the yard is open enough for a garden, and there are a couple sheds or garages.

Alternatively, you said you'd like a small walkable area. With your budget increase to $110,000 there is the house at http://www.realtor.com/realestateand...7_M38316-16660 . It is on a postage stamp of land, but in a walkable area.

It is right near the small downtown which is very walkable with quite a few restaurants and some small stores (like the Fabric Bug which I think has yarn). It also has the Thomaston Opera House for live theatre and the Phoenix Rising Center for art exhibits and events both downtown.

that is cool too, thomaston would definitely be a good location. and that lot's not terrible for being in a town. we grow quite a lot on a lot that size here, and i am pretty sure our house has a bigger footprint.

it is under deposit though.

Maybe I missed it in one of your posts, but do either of you have jobs lined up? Depending on what line of work you are in, it can be difficult to find work.

yeah, i'll be able to transfer within my company. i know the job market is tough up there. pittsburgh has really been weirdly shielded from all this financial crisis stuff. real estate has just chugged along slowly but steadily upward this whole time and unemployment is (relatively) low.

My grandmother lived there. There are many small WWII 4/5 ranches. I grew up in East Hartford and many of my friends lived in these small homes with 2 or 3 siblings.

There still are some very quiet neighborhoods but most people on CD will advise you to look elsewhere due to schools.

Personally, I think Bristol is a great value if you can find a home off of Stafford Ave, Washington Street or in some other areas of Forestville for under 100k. There are cheaper homes in the Westend but the areas I mentioned are more desirable and have easier access to the highway.

You cannot do it for that price range. 150K, maybe. We buy cruddy properties in New Britain to renovate and rent out, so we do know the market here. Anything you are seeing in that price range will probably be unliveable, possibly have severe structural flaws that make it a tear down, not qualify for any kind of loan, will need 100K of work, and it will STILL be in a slum with horrible schools, and won't sell for what you put into it. If that is all you can afford to spend on housing, you should plan on living in the Midwest, where housing is much cheaper.
