Are u shock ? Yale taking over New Haven ? state your thoughts

NEW HAVEN -The bartender answered the phone Sunday night and said, yes, tonight was the last night for the Anchor Bar, one of downtown’s remaining venerable watering holes.

The word wasn’t quite so certain once a reporter arrived; people who may have lost their jobs were not up for confirming the College Street bar’s demise. The reporter could stand outside in the rain, thank you.

But you can close a bar; you can’t stop people from talking.

And from all the traffic in and out and the upset faces and the “Is it true?” comments, it does seem likely that, like Rudy’s, Richter’s and other old-fashioned pubs with tin ceilings, the Anchor Bar was serving its last drafts.

“We’re done. Yale didn’t re-up the lease,” said Brian Loder, who said he was told by a manager that the Anchor was closing on Sunday.

“It’s hard for an employee that tonight’s the last night,” said Christina DelSanto, who said she’s been coming to the bar more than 20 years.

Apparently, word was given to the employees at 4 p.m. It’s quite mysterious that word was put out so late, some said, especially if the landlord had given notice. Several people identified the landlord as Yale University, which owns a number of retail storefronts downtown.

Yale University released the following statement on the bar, “University Properties entered into a lease with the current owners of the Anchor Bar, who purchased the business from the Anchor’s original owners a few years ago. The current owners have decided not to continue the business.”

Several people arrived having gotten the word on Facebook. One post, by Charles Mack, identified by others as a manager, said “I am very sad to announce that tonight will be the last night that the Anchor will be open for now. We may reopen in a couple weeks but right now we don’t know what’s happening.”

However, a woman sitting at the bar identified as a manager said matter-of-factly that she had not heard the news.

“I grew up coming to the Anchor. This is the quintessential New Haven dive bar,” said Michelle Terranova. “It’s a sad, sad day. It’s like all the best of New Havean goes away.”

In 2014, Esquire magazine named the Anchor as one of the 25 best bars in America, naming its gin martini twist as its signature drink. Nothing fancy, the bar features a jukebox, booths and that classic tin ceiling.

“It’s a true original for New Haven” said one patron escaping inside from the rain.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of the story misidentified Charles Mack, a manager, as Charles Black.

Yale says the bar's owners did not want to renew the lease. What they don't say is how much Yale wanted to increase the rent. That is usually the way it happens. A landlord increases the rent significantly and then blames it on the tenant saying they did not want to renew. Sorry to hear this. I just hope they don't bring in another chain restaurant or retailer, Jay

Same thing happened to Roomba. Its a shame. The place was an institution. It was a dive bar before dive bars were cool.

Very classy statement from Yale.

It's too bad Mr. Loder and the original owners(Moore family) and the reporter failed to check out the history of DWN Properties principal, David W. Nyberg. If they had, they would have noted previous DEFAULT CIVIL JUDGEMENTS against this individual before he even took over the Anchor.

More info in this article:

Quote:
Pollard said University Properties could have closed the Anchor in the fall for failure to keep up with the rent but allowed Nyberg to keep it open through the holidays.

According to a statement from Yale, “As requested by DWN, University Properties agreed that closure would be in early January 2015, after the holiday season, in order to allow them ample time to inform employees.”

Bummer, it was a very cool place. I'm not sure that Yale can be blamed for this though.

I still cry for Roomba. I LOVED that place.

Anchor was a staple. While I'm not in New Haven much anymore, it will be missed.
