Channel 7 NYC said that all CT roads closed to trucks at 11am, and to all traffic at 1pm. Wow!

Only neighbors directly on the water have boarded up due to lower wind predictions as Irene had higher winds here.

I figure that my house is about 6 feet above high tide and is on 4 ft piers. Praying that our neighborhood isn't wiped out.
The only hope for our area is the fact that the Oyster River outlet has made a delta at its mouth and that the bottom of the sound is high here. The water is 100 yards off shore at low tide and only about 1 foot deep at high tide at the end of the street. There is approximately a 5 to 6 foot rise above high tide of the beach in this area. Hopefully that will be enough to fight the surge! Fingers crossed!

Highways are closed, not all roads.

If the Isobars are spaced does that mean less gusty winds?

Just heard they're closing down the Bridgeport substation for CL&P in a few hours. I feel bad for anyone down that way. :/

THat's about as strong a storm as we've ever had! The 1938 hurricane (a Cat 3 that landfalled on Long Island) was 938 mb!!!! Hurricane Hazel (which briefly produced 100+mph winds in NYC in 1954) was 937mb with a similarly erratic bath but it made landfall in NC!

Unreal, even.
A drop to 937 simply means the storm is getting stronger. As far as being unheard of, Wilma had the lowest pressure ever at 882 back in 2005. So Sandy is getting stronger for now. Even if/when the pressure rises, it is such a broad storm that strong winds will span HUNDREDS of miles. This storm will certainly be felt by millions. Very impressive storm, Sandy is especially so late in the season.

So anyway, I hope it turns out far weaker than projected. The winds do not seem a threat at all, but the surge is the issue. Obviously, a more northerly track would aid Southern Ct.

Every governor I have seen on tv looks spooked, and it is understandable. The so called "Perfect Storm" while a good movie, hit mainly water, and sparsely populated areas.

Anyway, sorry for the rambling, but take extra care everyone.
We already have a thread going on about Sandy so I am merging this with it. JayCT, Moderator

Yes but with a size of storm like this a bigger space will mean high winds still but not as high as the tighter spaces if that makes sense.
