We recently put in a natural gas furnace to replace our oil furnace - YAY. And we will never own a home with oil heat again.

That said, how available IS natural gas in most parts of CT? I was surprised when a friend in Hamden said her neighborhood didn't have gas lines. I guess I expected that many rural towns may not be on gas lines, but she's far from rural.

Are there maps anywhere that show this? What have your experiences been?

I think if you are relatively close to a major road you have access for the most part. Ive never seen maps.

Well, here's a map and some info that goes with it. Unfortunately, the map is heard to read. Keep staring at it and you may see the colors.

Also and more unfortunately, the map is very misleading. My experience is mostly in south eastern and eastern CT. Many of the shaded areas that show natural gas are not for residential customers, but primarily some commercial use.

The only time we've ever had natural gas was when we lived in a Ct. city. According to Willow Wind's map, only about 550,000 have natural gas in Ct.

That's terrible. Natural gas seems to be the most cost-effective heating option. I wonder if rising heating oil prices will spur more gas lines.

Cheapest at the present time. Prior to 2005, oil and gas traded in a tight band. For most of the early 2000s, oil was less expensive. I wouldn't bet on wide dispersion in perpetuity either. In response to nat gas price collapse, new fracking wells are shifting from gas to liquids. The US and Canada have a huge supply of both, so prices are generally the driver.

Also nat gas is nice, but is a bit explosive. Probably going to become much more of a concern as the infrastructure ages.

Maybe when they bury the power lines they'll run the gas lines too. But until that happens (and I doubt it will) most of CT will remain without nat gas.

Utilities are buried on my street, which was made about 22 yrs ago. Gas company/developer opted to not put in gas lines. We were told a few years ago that the never retrofit roads like ours.
