New York City is even more expensive, at least anywhere that is commutable to Stamford. If you are looking for more affordable places to live, you might try Bridgeport. The Black Rock section has some nice more modest apartments but the commute to NYC would be longer. Still I am not sure you will be under your $800 budget. Jay

NYC is more expensive than Stamford and depending on where you are in NYC, it could be a very long commute. For example, to live near Grand Central for a quicker commute, you're looking at a VERY expensive place. Plus there's no express trains going in the opposite commute, so it's a longer train ride too.

If you're willing to make the train commute and are not willing to sacrifice space/newness, look at less expensive options on the New Haven line: Black Rock (neighborhood in Bridgeport), Stratford, Milford. Maybe look at Spinnaker Apartments or Metro Point for your nicer/newer place with a terrace/deck. Since they're right in downtown Milford, they're walkable to the train station. It's a safe, active area and quite a bit less expensive than Stamford.

The train commute to Stamford is ~25-35 minutes express from those areas.

No, it just means you can't live downtown. You could try an apartment in Springdale or Glenbrook, walk to the the train station there and get off downtown - your roommate can go right through to NYC. You might need to rethink the house angle though - might be your best bet if you want separate baths. Doable for $800-$1000/month each.

I'm a young professional as well and have lived in Stamford for the past two years working downtown. I live about a half mile from my office so I have a 15 minute walk to work. My roommate commutes to the city and the train station is about a mile away so she drives- I do have neighbors who do the walk. We pay 1650 for a large two bedroom with a balcony. I will say I looked for a place for a little while until suddenly I found something significantly cheaper than most other places (you may have to do some searching). Based on the time I looked at places, I will say you won't find something directly downtown unless you're willing to spend at least 2200 for a 2br. However, you can still walk to work if you go slightly north like I did (I basically consider myself living downtown- it's that close). I am currently looking to move to the city where apartments are at least twice the price and half the size so that definitely wouldn't be a more cost effective solution for you. Hope this helps.

To JnellG07,

My roommate and I are looking for the 2bed apartment as well. We work in downtown Stamford and looking for sth affordable 2,200 max. Do you mind sharing which apartment complex that you mentioned? 1650 rent is extremely good and I want to take a look at it as well

It probably wasn't an apartment complex. Most likely, it was one of the high-rise condo towers(like Fountain Terrace) on Strawberry Hill.
