We are looking to move this spring - we'd like a 2/3 bedroom condo, townhouse or home to rent (with garage) but are unsure where to start looking. Craigslist is FULL of scams, we've been contacted by a dozen landlords doing work in other countries!

We have good credit, references (we rent now and have been here 9 years) and 1 small dog. The issue is location - we want something in wallingford - southington area.. not really waterbury as were afraid of the school system.

Where would be a good place to look?

Try contacting a local realtor in your area.

Check realtor.com for listings. If you like Wallingford, the I would concentrate on there. Southington is nice too but not that close to Wallingford. And I agree the schools in Waterbury are not great so if that is going to be an issue then I would not look there at all. Jay

Realtor.com, Hotpads.com, Zillow.com. Also consider an agent.

Really Craigslist has become that bad (scams)? I use it to rent all my rentals. Looks like I may have to step it up a bit.

No. The place I'm living now was on CL actually. I've definitely seen some scams on CL but they're VERY obvious and tend to take you to other websites.

You should probably try Zillow, OP.

Thank you I will! I look on craigslist and alot of them seem realistic (1100 for a 2 bedroom) only to email them and get the reply about how they are a doctor in west africa and I'll need to send my "deposit" there so I can get the keys to the place. Ugh!

I set up with realtor and zillow - thanks for the ideas!

We still use Craigslist to rent out apartments. I think it's still fine. You just have to be smart. You have to go see the place with the owner, have to look up on the internet that he actually owns the property, no deposit without a lease. Craigslist scams are easy to spot. And if you do spot one, don't forget to report it to Craigslist.

I have used craigslist too but I have noticed that a lot of the ads are scams. And some of the responses I got were scams as well. Just be careful. Jay

It depends - I am a landlord doing work in another country but I am not a scammer.

However, I will always use an agent to rent my property.
