BRIDGEPORT -- While violent crime across the United States fell for a fifth straight year, Bridgeport saw around a 2 percent increase in the number of murders, forcible rapes, robberies, and aggravated assaults reported in the city, according to the preliminary uniform crime report released Tuesday by the FBI.
The FBI uses those four crime categories to make up the overall violent crime statistic, which was down 4 percent nationwide. Crime reports are voluntarily given to the FBI by cities with a resident population of 100,000 and over.
Bridgeport also saw about an 11 percent increase in the number of property crimes committed. Across the country, property crimes in 2011 dropped by 0.8 percent when compared with data from 2010. Property crimes include burglary, larceny-theft and motor vehicle theft.
Arson -- a property crime not included in the overall category -- rose from 20 occurrences in 2010 to 24 in 2011 in Bridgeport, while decreasing by 5 percent nationwide.
The number of murders in Bridgeport decreased slightly from 22 in 2010 to 20 in 2011. Ten of those killings from 2011 remain unsolved.
Forcible rapes increased by 103 percent in Bridgeport, with the number reported rising from 57 in 2010 to 116 in 2011. Across the country, forcible rapes dropped by 4 percent.
Robberies increased by 8 percent in Bridgeport, while aggravated assaults fell by 9 percent. There were 561 robberies reported in 2010 and 610 reported in 2011. Aggravated assaults fell from 772 in 2010 to 701 in 2011.
In the property crimes category, the number of burglaries reported in Bridgeport rose 6 percent (1,448 to 1,540), larceny-thefts went up 27 percent (2,377 to 3,025) and vehicle thefts increased by 21 percent (858 to 1,042).
Early statistics from 2012 show violent and property crime continues to trend upward in Bridgeport. Police Chief Joseph Gaudett said earlier this month there has been a 25 percent spike in homicides and 32 percent surge in robberies so far this year.
In Fairfield County, Stamford saw a 10 percent increase in violent crimes, with 389 reported in 2011 compared with 351 in 2010. Around the state, New Haven saw a 12.5 percent decrease in violent crime, from 1,994 in 2010 to 1,744 in 2011. Violent crimes did rise slightly in Hartford, with 1,624 reported in 2010 and 1,639 in 2011.
The final FBI uniform crime report will be released in the fall.

2 percent is variance... Not really statistically significant. Show me a few years of 2% increases and I'll get more concerned.

2% from 2010-2011 1 year period It May be 5-10% this year 2012 because Bridgeport has increase 15-32% in all crime areas.

Bridgeport is currently in the "lead" for homicides in 2012. New Haven and Hartford seem to have had sharp declines vs. last year.

I will say I've spent some considerable time in Bridgeport the last week. One thing I've observed in many (most) of its neighborhoods is, despite having similar crime stats as New Haven, it is a much, much more blighted looking city. Between beat-up properties, abandoned industrial, trash, terrible roads and just overall poor aesthetics - it certainly looks like the worse city. I can't comment on Hartford as I don't spend enough time there and haven't explored as much of the city as I have New Haven and Bridgeport.

How do you figure this. The North End takes up easily a quarter of the city and when you add in parts of Chopsey Hill, Beardsley Park and Black Rock you really have less than half of the city being remotely sketchy. JMHO, Jay

A lot of north end isn't very attractive. Not blighted, but not pretty either.

I think when you are next to towns that are mostly picturesque-- like Fairfield and Trumbull-- it's easy to look sketchy by comparison.
