How will this affect CT ?

STRATFORD -- Sikorsky Aircraft officials announced Friday that the company will lay off 600 employees. The reduction will affect both salaried and hourly workers.
"Today, we notified employees that the company will undertake further restructuring amid the challenging and unstable economic conditions that continue to affect our industry," said company spokesman Paul Jackson. "These decisions are always difficult to make, but necessary to protect the company's competitiveness and future. As is our practice, we will provide transition assistance for those employees who are affected."
Jackson said the workforce reductions will occur over the next several weeks and will be split about evenly between salaried and hourly positions.
Jackson also said they come in the wake of "significant cost reduction actions" already taken by the company.
Company officials said the staff reductions will occur mostly in Connecticut, where Sikorsky has its largest employee population of about 8,200 workers. The company employs about 16,500 people globally

That will have a substantial affect, it dwarfs most normal plant closings in terms of scope.

Normal ebb and flow for Sikorsky. Been that way for DECADES. Layoff. Hire. Layoff. Hire.

It won't, plants like this do it all the time. Those who were laid off probably took very nice packages to accept the layoff.

P&W just laid off 300 a couple months ago, didn't they?

OMG, this is going to have a terrible economic effect in the Bridgeport/Trumbull*/Stratford area.

I am from Trumbull.

600 is huge, though. Outside of Bayer several years ago, whom else would lay off that quantity in a small state? And, if you read the article, there is no rehire in the pipeline. The business simply isn't as hot as it was in the early part of last decade.

I know lots of people who work here....its normal. Happens all the time. The only reason why its larger this time is because they are trying to get the people who are 60 and above out. They are being given generous packages.....

But yea the rest are just the normal layoff/hire/layoff/hire group.

Business as usual for a UTC company. Pratt & Whitney has been laying off then hiring en masse for years. Sikorsky has the same ebb and flow.

Bigger issue is that utc is looking to sell Sikorsky off. Almost %100 chance whoever buys it will close up shop and move to south where no unions and lower wages. That would be a huge loss.

What might be different is layoff in CT, hire elsewhere.
