Given the present issues my town of Hamden is facing with pensions, Im curious to see just what we pay town employees in pensions and perhaps even salary. I figured its the tax payers who pays it so we should be able to see these numbers. I havent had any luck in my search yet though. Any ideas

The Yankee Institute Open Government theres this here for Ct state. Sorry it doesnt help with the town of Jamden. It cant be to hard to find out though. Call the clerks office and ask directly though. Or ask them about an online resource even.

Town employee pensions are partly funded by the employees themselves and partly by town or the state. In the past couple of years, newly hired town employees in Hamden pay into a state pension fund, not the town's fund. Older employees are covered by the town, although they also pay into their retirements.

Here's a link for that

ELECTION 2011, THE ISSUES: The Pension Fund - Hamden, CT Patch

Teachers pay into a state retirement system, they contribute something like 7.25 % of their annual salary into it. With contributions from the state too of course.

The info you want should be available in town hall, perhaps in the finance department. It's not a secret, it has to exist, it's just a matter of getting someone to give it to you. Hopefully you don't have to tile a Freedom of Information request to get it.

Thanks both for the info. Just trying to understand first how they managed to get so screwed up with what they have versus what they were supposed to have for pensions, and just what sort of pensions the public employees get.

Seems to me someone screwed up somewhere. And while generally I dont like to whine much about what someone makes in salary or pension, I think when it comes to public employees its sort of a different story. Ill do some looking in my free time for my own curiosity. Might have to look into what the town uses our tax dollars while im at it. While our Mill Rate isnt the highest, it sure seems high for a town like this.

They get different things depending on their contract. Some employees are union, some are not. Some are in one union, while others are in a different union. Some employees get more, others less. Some pay more out of pocket, some less, some not at all. Part of that depends on when they were hired, AND when they are due to retire, vs. when they actually retire. Some plans offer a full payout at "x" age/years of service, and some offer it at "y" age/years of service.

You won't find one single source of pension information, because not all town employees were hired on the same date, and the contract terms (of several different contracts) all have different criteria. This is pretty much how all contractual employees have pensions handled, in all venues of employment. It isn't just municipalities.
