Boston is also 4-5 times bigger than any city in CT, has a boatload of colleges nearby and also has 3 major league sports teams in town in the Red Sox, Bruins and Celtics. So, their downtown is likely to have at least 4-5 times as many things going on before you add in the extra college students and pro sports teams.

If you consider Harvard & Yale a wash, Boston still has MIT, BC, BU, UMass-Boston, Northeastern, Simmons, Emerson, Tufts, Suffolk Univ, and several others I'm probably missing. New Haven has UNH, SCSU and Albertus Magnus, and that's about it. Plus, the state has 0 in the way of major league sports teams to draw in visitors from the suburbs.

New Haven could have a sports complex in the English Station/Mill River area which is underutilized as industrial property. Hartford has the XL Center.

The problem is making a case of interest when we're between Boston and NYC.

New Haven is the fastest growing city in New England, growing about 0.9% faster than Boston
