It’s boring compared to NYC. What isn’t?

My son, when he was 6, on the train back from Manhattan: “Can we move to New York City?” No. “But Connecticut is so boring.”

If is 6 year old is making that comparison, I can see why others do. Just walking around in NYC is incredible. It is a world class city.

Go to central Florida and get back to me on how boring CT is. This a a relative measure.

I don’t find it particularly boring; but on the flip side I certainly don’t find it particularly exciting or dynamic either.

I guess it can be summed up as being an overall nice/decent place to live, especially if you have extended family living within an hour or so in other states.

The exciting place to visit is not always an easy place to live.

Example New London a City in close proximity to an aquarium, an art museum, a Fort, a beach, college's, a working old time seaport, and so on. You have Casinos near by. Work on making that a hub. Has a beautiful downtown waterfront area by the train station.
This is what I keep saying. There IS stuff here. There ARE things to do. It's all secret though.

The state needs to publicize the attractions. When I lived in MA, there were brochures and signs and I could always find something interesting to do. For instance, here in CT there is a really interesting carousel museum in Bristol. (It needs work, needs to be brightened up, made more attractive)--but the collection of beautiful antique carousel horses and the snippets of history describing where they came from, who carved and painted them, etc. is fascinating. I think there's a real carousel out in back that you can ride on but I didn't even know that when I went there! No one tells you and if there was a sign, I missed it. You have to publicize these things and let people know. What a great thing for a family to do on a rainy day! And if the rain stops, there is probably an actual carousel you can ride on outside. Somebody should set up an ice cream stand there with coffee and snacks--make it into an attraction. But no. It's hidden away and it looks sort of shabby from the outside.

Rambling on here (it's the boredom, lol), the only reason I knew about the carousel museum was that the town I just moved from in MA used to have its own carousel. The carousel was sold off, sadly. But there's great town spirit to raise the money to bring it back! Some horses in the Bristol museum were carved by the same artist who carved the horses on my old town's carousel. So I googled and eventually--hooray--a carousel museum in Bristol. Who knew?

Maybe there's some reason that museum is largely neglected (or seems to be) so I apologize if I'm stepping on toes here, but that's a prime example of something that COULD be a major attraction. Spiffy it up, add some place to get a snack, advertise it--let people know it exists. There's another carousel in Hartford--that's probably a secret too, I think. I found out about that by visiting the museum in Bristol.

I know Mystic Seaport is there but I lived in CT before. Would a newcomer know? Maybe. What about the submarine that you can see and board, the Nautilus! --I think it's in Groton. Somehow my husband discovered that and was given a tour--he was thrilled but he only learned about it by word of mouth.

Cute beach towns. Thank goodness I lived here before so I know enough to go to Essex and (being a woman, lol) shop in the cutest shops I've seen in a long time--not expensive, yet different and fun. Oh--the train that I remember is gone but there's a museum of the CT River that could have kept us entertained all day long. And bring your camera because it's very beautiful there in Essex.

Harkness Memorial State Park--there's history and beauty, a lovely place for a picnic, serene and quiet with ocean. (not a great beach, but salt water and you can wade in it.) There's a mansion you can tour. A wonderful place for families and couples.

East Haddam area with the Goodspeed and the Gelston House Restaurant. Too expensive for me now that I'm retired, but it's still fabulous. There are other playhouses nearby but why do we never hear about them?

It's a big secret but CT doesn't have to be boring. You only have to sit and research and research and research to find the things that the state should be advertising and promoting. Is Old Newgate Prison still open as an attraction? Another thing to fascinate older kids and any history buffs--used to be a copper mine, in Granby, I think. Went there many years ago--it's underground, like exploring caves!

Wethersfield--maybe the nearest equivalent is Historic Deerfield in Western MA but they promote it, have a museum, a historical library, a gift shop, ongoing workshops that are hands on. They promote genealogy, which is a very popular hobby and will attract people. Is there some reason Wethersfield couldn't so something like that?

But CT just lets things Rot!

Orlando is in central Florida. I wouldn’t classify that as boring. It may not be your cup of tea but with over 70 million tourists visiting just Orlando each year I’d say plenty of people don’t find it boring. How many tourists visit CT each year? I personally don’t find Connecticut boring but many people find central Florida exciting enough to vacation there.

I don’t think they mean Orlando. I am guessing BlackRocker is talking about Citrus County where I have family. Pretty dull there. Jay

Lol - seriously. Unless you’re in the very rural parts of central FL (which CT has also), it’s laughable to call FL boring.

I agree with Jay that it really depends on who you are. Wherever you go, there you are.

No more dull than Willimantic or Torrington/Winsted.

CT isn’t boring, it’s just there. We aren’t really known for any touristy stuff which is fine. People in CT go to Vermont for skiing, Rhode Island for beaches and NYC or Boston for Cities.

CT is like a 2 hours from all the places people want to be. Lol. A good central command to dispatch the troops from. Lol jK

All seriousness CT has never been boring to me. There is always something going on somewhere. My family has been fortunate enough to have a house by the shore so summers are always a good time. Winters, not a fan. Fall we have a ton of fairs every weekend somewhere. It’s also a great way to see the State.

I do miss fall, but don’t miss the hours upon hours of blowing leaves from the massive oaks in my yard.

I also agree. States are not dull. States are simply land masses. If you consider an area dull, look in the mirror, and you will find out why it feels that way to you.
