We are trying to figure out whether we can afford to have our lawn mowed by someone else or whether we should keep doing it ourselves. So far I have not been calling big companies because I am afraid of the rates they are going to give me, so instead I am trying to find an independent guy who will do the job for less.

So far I got a quote from somebody who would be using his own mower and he is asking $80 for one mowing session for 1.5 acres of lawn. What do other people pay?

If you have better rates than that, please give me some contacts.

Stylo, may I know what town or county you live in? Also, how big is your lawn?

I'm in Stratford with a .3 acre property; had a independent guy cut it previously for $20. Low and behold, he was extremely unreliable and I later find out that he was sued by a client.

I currently use another independent guy now and he charges $45. You guys tell me...but I feel like it is a bit on the high side. However, he is very reliable and his business has been around for years. It's established and gives me a peace of mind.

I don't think lawn mowing has a sales tax.

The best is when I see these guys mowing the lawn during a drought....when grass hasnt grown. I understand its a contract thing to mow every week or so many times per contract, but when the grass is 1" tall is it really necessary? Such a waste IMO. Customer can be saving a ton of money during those weeks.

So I recemmend hiring on a per cut basis not a contract. If they say $30 per cut, make sure they are cutting it when grass needs it and not when they are bored. Add $10 to that and tell them to fertilize 3 times a year. (a bag is only $30). So $40 per cut April to November includes fertilizing 3 times. Spring, Summer, Fall.

I pay $45 per cut in Wilton for 1.5 acres of "mowable" yard. All other landscaping services are on an hourly basis.
