A few days ago I saw a dead turkey on the side of I-691 in Meriden. This morning a turkey darted out and ran in front of my car in Rocky Hill. What's up with these birds? Are they looking for mates?

Wow. I saw one two days ago that stopped traffic in Glastonbury. I assumed it was loose from a nearby farm........

Yes, this is turkey breeding season. But it's also an indication of how well the wild turkey has established itself in CT. They're all over the place.

PS, if you see one, there are others nearby-

I've heard it joked that in CT (and adjacent eastern NY) wild turkeys are "the new deer". Like deer, I've even seen them in almost-urban areas to some extent. At least they don't damage cars to the extent that deer do if you hit them......

I thought that this would be some sort of a political discussion.

Do they have a thing for hills? They're always hanging out on the grassy areas on the steep side my street (which covers a big hill).

A few years ago when I was living in an apartment, I looked out the window and there were FIFTEEN of them in the parking lot. (I counted them.) It was pretty intimidating to go out to the car and I do hear that the things BITE. In this case a neighbor was throwing bread crumbs out for the birds.

A few years ago, a big tom flew/smashed through a closed double pane bedroom window...across the room...through the open doorway... and into the hall. Dazed and seriously wounded, it crawled into the hall closet, about 25 feet from the window.

Though in rough shape, he was still alive. He was eventually removed and dispatched by professionals wearing protective clothing.

Interestingly, when the story was told to the clerk at the local small post office, the another customer in the lobby said they'd had a similar experience recently.

The cleanup of glass on the bed and floor, and many feathers, took a lot of effort. Weeks later, a 3" shard of glass was discovered impaled in the sheet-rock beside the door.

Even in West Haven here they are all over the place. I see families of a dozen or more all the time.

They are becoming desensitized to people. You can almost walk beside them and they wont flee. Ive opened the door at my friends house and theyve been right next to the door and they just keep scavenging.

Its pretty cool if you ask me but people still arent going to stop when they see one crossing a road.

Ive been seeing foxes occasionally as well.
