I guess I didn't mean things to do in the sense of restaurants or parks (I know Fairfield has plenty of those), but more that towns with a large population of young people (meaning in their 30s - too old to only be interested in bars/clubs but too young to want to stay home all the time) tend to be vibrant places with people walking around, a sense of "city" life. That's what I'm seeking. I guess it really does all come down to affordability, though.

Stamford has the vibe you're looking for, especially in downtown.

One of the nicest things about this city is that it has plenty of diversity in the age department. You will see young couples enjoying a meal a few steps from more mature people also enjoying their own meals and life. There are events for all tastes and ages, often times the older crowd and the younger ones intermingling as if age is not a major differentiator.

The same could be said of every other type of diversity, but I think this is possible because most people in Stamford, regardless of their characteristic, are well established in the middle class, even the young ones.

I think the exception to this are the Latino and possibly the African American communities, but I definitely think most of them are middle class too, but percentage wise their middle classes probably makes up a lower percentage within their communities than does in the whites or Asians communities.

Anyway, this creates much tolerance in this city.

I live in Stamford now and love the downtown vibe/activity. If it wasn't for the fact that Stamford has schools that are much, much worse than Fairfield, we would definitely be house hunting here instead of there.

Again, wasn't the point I was trying to make. The OP questioned whether there's less young people because of the desirability of the town to younger people or the cost of living. My point was that it has nothing to do with desirability, and cost of living is an issue with some of my friends that moved to other towns.
