Hello,
We live in Georgia, and our son is attending school in Windsor, CT. We are wanting to possibly move up there this summer to be close to him. My husband is a high school math teacher. Is it difficult to find high school math and coaching jobs in CT? When do systems normally start hiring? We would like to live in a rural part of CT (I think they still exist) where housing is cheaper. I have seen people mention Eastern CT and places like Putnam, Ellington, Vernon, etc. Any suggestions where a good place to live and teach there would be? Also, what about Western CT? I hear it is beautiful there near the Appalachain Trail, but is it expensive (Salisbury for example)? And, what about Windsor? I have heard not so great things about living and teaching there, but it would be close to our son and we would love that as we miss him very much!! Any ideas would be appreciated.

Western CT has expensive places like Litchfield and most certainly Salisbury. But less expensive like Torrington, Watertown and Plymouth.

Putnam in far eastern Connecticut's northeast corner is one of the fastest growing parts of the state- with real estate prices that are the lowest in CT- nearby Woodstock, Brooklyn and Pomfret are very attractive as well.

Towns just east of Hartford, Glastonbury, South Windsor, Manchester also Vernon, Somers (Tolland county) have good to excellent school systems, but also have the lowest priced housing in the Hartford area.

Math/science teachers are in demand in CT. I suggest you send out resumes to these towns mentioned. If you relocate all these towns need substitute teacher, and long tern subs in their systems. It would be a good way to try and become recognized- especially for math and science.

Windsor is a town that I would avoid. Other towns west of Hartford that are excellent include West Hartford, Avon, Farmington and Simsbury. These towns all have fine educational systems.

Rocky Hill, Wethersfield and Newington (all just south of Hartford) are also very recommended.

There is a real need for math teachers in Connnecticut these days. Usually school districts hire during the summer break but they are looking for math teachers just about any time of the year. Coaching may be more difficult since there seem to be many already but you never know. There are a couple of teachers on this Board that may have suggestions. Jay
