Both schools have plenty of candidates to choose from so it's not as simple as having a 3.9 GPA or 1400 SAT scores. I think personality and extracurriculars come into play at both schools.

Honestly however, I've had to interview entry level candidates coming out of a range of schools for roles in investment operations. Beyond some basic knowledge of different types of securities and maybe very entry level excel, most kids don't know anything about these types of jobs. All a 3.5+ GPA tells me is you've shown the potential to work hard. Maybe you have a chance of surviving. I only use about maybe 10% or less of the knowledge I learned in school. Everything else has been on the job or on my own personal time learning skills that most universities just don't teach or don't go into specifics that many jobs demand.

I don't know about anyone else but I can surely see a huge disconnect between the curriculem in colleges, at least for business and finance, and the actual skills needed in many of the business and finance jobs out there.

Business schools are definitely getting plenty of attacks lately. Look at this: Why Getting an M.B.A. Isn't Worth It - WSJ.com

Also, do you know what major they wanted to do? I know for instance that the School of Business at UConn is very competitive to get into.
Not sure of SAT score but certainly decent enough to get into Fairfield. And they were not declaring a major. Jay

The coclusion appears to be that UConn is not an 'elite' university in the traditional sense, but it does ram=nks high among CT universities, it ranks quite high among New England public universities, and it has become more 'elite' than Fairfield.

Fairfield was never "elite", and is still not elite. Neither is UConn.

Fairfield is considered second to Boston College in Catholic universities in New England. That does kind of make it somewhat elite. Maybe not Ivy League but it is up there. Jay

Maybe we oughta define "elite" first?

If UConn had a goal of becoming an academic peer of state universities like UNC or Michigan, I can find absolutely no fault in that whatsoever. And they're getting there.
